Summary: Earl’s way of coping with the dark.
Notes: Younger Earl for bookblather :) I’m not sure how much of his history will be explained in the actual story, but he comes from a lower class family that is not as immersed in the magical community as the Wellingstones, Gardiners, and Kopens are. He probably used his abilities (especially the crafting of illusions) unconsciously for a long time before figuring out that they were abilities and could affect other people.

“Goodnight, sweetie, I love you.”

“Love you too, Mom.”

She leaned down and kissed him on the forehead, tucking the covers more securely around him as she did so, and turned to walk out of the room. He made the smile stay on his face until she shut the door and left him to the darkness.

Closing his eyes against the horrors that lurked in the crevices of the room, he took slow, deep breaths to will them away and replace them with what he wanted to see. When I open my eyes, the monsters will be gone.

Suddenly, color touched his eyelids. He opened them to find that a window had opened in the ceiling, drenching him in light the color of a warm sunset-golden yellow edged with red. Beyond the opening, gentle life thrived. Trees stood tall and proud, flowers opened up to the light, and little animals and insects danced across his vision. He could see birds, rabbits, little dogs, dragonflies-nothing with large, sharp teeth that could tear him apart in seconds.

Reassured, he closed his eyes again, knowing that all he had to do was open them if he got scared.
