“Okay, kiddo, you can look through the lens, but don’t touch the rest of the parts, okay? Tell me what to move, and I’ll move it for you.”

Rand leaned over, pressing his palms to the tabletop for support, and squeezed his right eye shut as he peered through the lens with his left. Molly barely restrained her laughter at seeing this. He must be paying more attention to us than he lets on. “Make it go up,” he said, and she began to ease the stage toward him, watching the way his mouth twitched as he studied the images.

“Do you want to order in, Molly?” her husband called from the kitchen.

“Sure. Let’s get a pizza, it’s been a while.”

“I want anchovies,” Rand said, without looking up.

“No, you don’t,” Molly said. “Remember the last time we got anchovies for you? They smelled bad and you didn’t like them.”

“I might like them this time.”

She chuckled and kissed the top of his head. “How about pepperoni instead?”

“I guess that’s okay. Make the pictures go that way.” He pointed to his right, and she accordingly guided the stage to the left. He scowled. “It’s not doing anything.”

She glanced down to see what he was looking at, and laughed outright. “Rand, that’s just the light. You had me move the slide away from the lens, so there’s nothing to look at.”

“Oh.” He pulled away from the microscope and hopped down from the stool. “It was boring anyway. Will you read me a story?”

Molly looked at her watch. “I think there’s time for a short one before the pizza comes. Why don’t you ask your dad if he wants to help too?”

Rand beamed and bounded off to find Richard. She watched him go with a fond smile, pushing away the melancholy thoughts that lurked in the crevices of her mind. The longer we can keep him out of our work, the better.
