“Mama.” Tugging on her mother’s hand, Julia’s frown deepened even more as she was told to wait a moment. Yes, she knew was interrupting, but this was important. Tugging on her mother’s hand again, harder, she tried again. “Mamaaaa!”

Sunset sighed, offering an apologetic smile to her conversation partner before she turned to face her daughter. “Julia, we’ve talked about interrupting before. Remember?”

“But! But, Mama!” Looking around before lowering her voice to a stage whisper, Julia continued. “I saw somethin’! Somethin’ really, really, really weird.”

Holding back another sigh, even as a smile was twitching at the corner of her lips, Sunset quickly offered an “Excuse me for a moment.” to the person she was talking to before leading her daughter to a quieter and much more secluded corner of the reception hall. “Alright. What did you see?”

“I saw Mr. Andy kissin’ somebody.”

“Julia... People kiss other people all the time. You know that.”

“But he was kissin’ a boy!” Julia protested, stomping a foot to get her point across.

Sunset was quiet after that, brow furrowing as she frowned. “Julia...”

“I did see it, Mama, I swear it!”

“No, Julia. I’m not saying I don’t believe you. I’m saying...“ Trailing off, Sunset let out a heavy breath, running a hand through her hair. “Remember how we talked about people having secrets, and how we shouldn’t tell other people those secrets?

“But he was kissin’-“

Frown deepening, Sunset cut Julia off, her voice stern. “Remember?”

“Yes, Mama.” Pouting now, Julia scuffed a Mary Jane clad foot against the ground, looking at anything but her mother’s face. “I didn’t know it was a secret, though.”

“I know you didn’t, baby. But there are some things you don’t tell people without permission, and this is going to be one of them. Now promise me you won’t tell anybody else.”

“Mama...”

“Promise.”

“I promise.” Grumbling, Julia scuffed her shoe against the floor again, very obviously not happy with this turn of events. If she had known she was going to get in trouble, she would have just left it alone.

“Good.” Kneeling down to kiss the four year old on the forehead, Sunset gently pushed the girl back in the direction of the party. “Now run along and play with the other children. I’ll find you when they’re about to cut the wedding cake.”

Heaving a sigh like she was just told to do a big chore, Julia nodded again before running off. And she didn’t even get to tell anyone the really weird part, either.
