“Excuse me, ma’am?”
Chloe looked up as she placed the last book in her locker, eyes curious. In a moment, she took in the boy in front of her; the neon orange UFC pants, purple tank top, and platform sneakers; the bright blue hair that matched his eyes, the many tattoos on his arms, and nervous worrying of the lip rings in his bottom lip. Immediately, she smiled, and he seemed almost taken back by the sincerity of it. “Yeah?”
Adjusting the black messenger bag he had, he shyly smiled back and held up a rather crumpled looking schedule. “I was just wonderin’ if you could tell me where the art room was?” He asked, Georgian drawl obvious and out of place amidst the various New York accents that seemed to crowd the hallway.
Chloe’s smile only widened. “Of course! I think that might actually be on my way...” She closed her locker, and slid her backpack onto her shoulders before reaching for his schedule and peering at it. “Yup! Just follow me, and I’ll get you there.” She handed the schedule back to him, as she fell into step beside him, and he seemed grateful for her presence as they made their way through the crowd. His answering smile was nearly blinding.
“Thanks so much. You’re the first person I really talked to today, ‘cause I heard so many things about everyone in New York bein’ so mean but you don’t seem it at all, miss.” He babbled as the piece of paper was shoved into a pocket. “But I figured art class ain’t gonna be so bad, ‘cause it’s art, but then I couldn’t remember where what was and you looked a lot nicer than lots of other people, and I’m glad you actually are ‘cause then I don’t know what I would have done.”
She found herself listening avidly, soaking up the way he talked like a sponge absorbed water. Before she realized it, Chloe found herself laughing. “I’m sorry! I’m not laughing at you, I promise, you’re just so - You’re so you and it’s just adorable, and I might want to adopt you.”
“I don’t know if my parents would let you adopt me.” He answered, sounding sorrowful about the situation. “I was surprised they even let me move here, but then my aunt got me accepted to here, and I begged ‘em enough to where they didn’t have much choice, I guess. But everything is so big, and loud and the people are so colorful, and it’s amazing. And oh my gosh, my momma would be so mad right now, I haven’t even - I’m Jackson! Or Jax. But never ever never Jack.”
Chloe laughed again, and impulsively throw her arms around him in a hug. Just as soon, she realized what she was doing and backed off. It didn’t seem to offend him, however, and he laughed along with her. “I’m sorry! I just - do that, sometimes, when something makes me really happy. You must be really, really good at making people happy. You’re like CheerBear. But it’s okay, cause I didn’t tell you my name, either. I’m Chloe, and you absolutely positively need to come sit with me and my friends at lunch. You’d fit right in, I swear.”
Jax thought it over for a moment, before that shy element came back to his smile, and he nodded. “’Kay. I think I’d like that.”
