Chloe wasn’t sure if she had been elated or terrified when the doctor told her that she would be having two babies. Now that they were born, she still wasn’t sure. Slowly, though, she was getting used to it all, and she took immense pleasure in the fact that she was still the only one that could tell Ira and Ria apart. Kurt was getting there, but she couldn’t blame him for still being confused. At this point, they were still nearly identical; the fraternal part wouldn’t become noticeable until they were older.

For Chloe, it was easiest for her to tell her babies apart when they cried. As soon as she bent over the crib, Ria would stop his wailing and stare up at her with curious blue eyes. In reaction, Ira would only scream louder, as if she felt like it was her responsibility to make up for the sudden lack of noise. After that, she would only eat after she had been calmed down, after Chloe had walked her around the room and sang something old and soft.

She discovered that Ira calmed the quickest to things like Elvis and Barbara Streisand, and never stopped being amazed at how calm Ria would be throughout the entire ordeal of calming his sister. Slowly, she got used to feeding them both at once, to calming Ira as quickly as she could, to helping Kurt when he didn’t quite know what to do. Slowly the terrified feeling disappeared, even as the elated feeling remained, underneath the frustration and exhaustion, when the babies were sick and wouldn’t sleep, or stop crying; when she was exhausted from lack of sleep; when her days sometimes seemed to be nothing more than feeding them, and changing them, and calming them, that happy feeling remained.

If there was anything she was good at, it was being a mother. For the first time in her life, she had a job more important that her singing career, and it amazed her how easy it was to accept that.
