Miyabi's all-dialogue piece was so awesome I decided to try it myself, and I've been promising this particular piece for a while. Followup to
Daddy's Little Girl and
Provocation. "Hello. Tara Carson, isn't it?"
"Oh, Gail Hirschfeld. So pleased to see you. How are you this evening?"
"Quite well, thank you, and yourself?"
"Only so-so, I'm afraid. Your terror of a child punched my poor daughter in the face."
"My husband mentioned. I did want to apologize for that. Is Ellen all right?"
"Fortunately, Ellen's nose isn't broken. Her nosebleed lasted for twenty minutes, though."
"Poor Ellen. Well, she'll be all right."
"She will not be all right! Her dear friend, a girl she trusted, hit her in the face! She may be scarred for life!"
"She's five, Tara. She'll get over it. Probably by next week."
"She'll be in therapy by the time she's twelve, and it will be your child's fault."
"Mmhmm. That reminds me, I had something I wanted to say to you."
"Oh, really."
"First, I am truly sorry that Ivy hit your daughter. She and I have had words, and I think I can promise you that it will not happen again."
"I should hope not."
"Second, I don't appreciate you questioning the validity of my marriage. Fortunately for you, my husband thought it was funny, so I'll let you off on that one."
"What on earth are you..."
"Finally, I want to make this crystal clear. If you ever again, directly or indirectly, imply that my daughter is worth anything less than the world and all its treasures, to her or to anyone else, you will not be dealing with her. You will have to deal with me. And you will. Not. Like. It."
"..."
"Am I clear?"
"...perfectly."
"Good. I'm glad we had this conversation."
