“And it was so cool ‘cause he was shooting at the alien and his head, like, ‘sploded!” Cal Brewer was cackling in the next seat. The girl sat next to him, a young thing named Judy with darkly glossy bracken-coloured hair raked back into two plaits, stopped fiddling with her pink pencil case and turned to look at him. He was leaning over to the next table excitedly, discussing with several other early students in their class.

“Yeah, well,” chipped in Bryson Binns, “My dad has Automaton Revolution 2 and ran over all these baddies like... bleeeghh!”

“My daddy,” interrupted Judy suddenly, and with startlingly white teeth showing through her girlish lips, “Can throw a knife at a target the size of a grape and hit it from twenty feet away. Although obviously he doesn’t waste his time on grapes. And Mummy can kill people too, with her eyes... or that’s what Daddy says, anyway. I haven’t seen her do it.”

“Cool!” said Cal, grinning dopily. “What game’s that?”

“My daddy doesn’t play games,” Judy Prowse replied loftily. “Though he’s no fun and won’t teach me how to throw knives because he says I’ll kill people.”

“Would you?”

“Yeah,” Judy said, idly picking at the sleeve of the maroon jumper of her school uniform. “I’d kill you first, Cal. You smell of socks.”
