"Daddy, please."

"No," Isaac said, without looking down. He sighted on a target, threw, nodded in satisfaction as the knife skewered it neatly.

"Mummy says I can," Judy said, with the air of one delivering an unshakable argument.

Isaac shook his head. "I'm sure she does. That doesn't mean you may."

Judy's expression showed her opinion of this sort of wordplay fairly clearly. "Daddy! I'd be really good at it."

"That's what scares me, poppet," he told her. "No."

She scowled again, kicked at the floor. "Mummy would let me," she muttered.

"Mummy," Isaac said, "would teach you far more interesting ways to kill people. Why don't you go ask her."

Judy, who was Adele's daughter through and through, perked up. "Really? Like what?"

He sighted on another target. "Well," he said, "you know what Uncle Edward says every time Aunt Verity glares at him? If looks could kill?"

Judy arched an eyebrow, another thing she'd gotten from her mother and had likely been born knowing. After a moment, she said, "Yes?" in a this-better-be-interesting tone.

"Your mother's looks," Isaac said, "can. Now run along."

He'd evidently given her a lot to consider, because she didn't react to the 'run along,' and in fact merely nodded gravely and ambled away, deep in thought.

Oh dear, he thought, and threw.
