The first thing she noticed as her consciousness returned was the cold, hard floor she seemed to be lying on. The next was the stench. It was an overpowering mix of dirt and sweat that burned the inside of her nose.

It took her a few seconds to remember where she was and why she was there.

"Come on Gharak. We have to do this," she whispered to her friend.

"We were told multiple times not to go into the cities. It's too dangerous!"

"We don't have a choice! We need to do this," she hissed back. "We just need to be careful and make sure no one recognizes us."

"No, Jhera. We'll find some other way."

She stared at him and raised an eyebrow. "And I suspect we've just been on a nice, relaxing vacation for the last few days. We've looked, and we haven't found anything. There's barely any food left, we have no other choice."

Gharak sighed and looked away, rubbing his hands over his face. "Fine, but I don't want to stay there any longer than we have to."

She nodded and outlined a plan as they pulled their hoods up to cover their faces, tugging them down as far as possible to cover their tanned skin. If anyone caught even the smallest glimpse of their skin color, they would be arrested...if they were lucky.

They crept towards the outskirts of the city and set out to see what they could find. They were both nervous about being caught, but they knew that this was their only option.

Keeping to the shadows of the buildings, they made their way farther into the city. It wasn't the best time to be entering into unknown, hostile territory.

It was a beautiful day in late summer and there were kids playing everywhere. They were running through the streets laughing and shouting, without paying any attention to where they were going.

This is where they ran into trouble, when a small girl being chased by her friends ran into Gharak, causing his hood to fall back.

The girl had turned to apologize, but screamed and started running to a nearby building when she saw that his skin was dark.

The girl was running to a police station and even before she reached the door, officers were already coming out to see what the screaming was about.

Once the police saw that they were from the tribes, they called for backup and formed a circle around them.

Jhera could feel Gharak gathering power around him, preparing to attack the men, but she knew that this would just make everything worse. "Don't," she whispered to him, "it won't do us any good."

He growled under his breath, but was cut off as a few of the men dove forward to hold them in place, while two more stepped forward and held cloths over their mouths.

The last thing she remembered was the smell and taste of chemicals before she passed out.

~~~~~~~~~~
Ugh, she thought, that really did not go well. This is exactly what Gharak was worried about. Wait...
That was when she realized that he wasn't nearby. She turned her head to get a better sense of her surroundings.
She saw the bars, a hallway, and another set of bars.
It was a jail, and the person in the cell facing hers was staring at her. He started yelling at her about the war, but it just faded out as darkness started clouding the corners of her vision.
