"This was a good idea," Alianna decided, looking up through the leaves at the shifting patterns of green and gold made by the sunlight through the canopy. "It's so beautiful out here."
Hummer, who'd stopped a few paces ahead on the trail, smiled at her. "I'm glad you think so."
"I mean," she went on, "the house is wonderful, really. Beautiful architecture. But it almost feels like a museum." She paused a moment, still staring up at the interlaced branches of the trees, then added, "Except for the library."
He chuckled. "You would think that. Come on, we're almost there."
"Where are we going?" she asked, catching up to him. She reached out and took his hand. She felt so comfortable with him now that it felt like the right thing to do-- she'd never felt that comfortable with anyone, not even Suzie. Comfortable enough to take his hand, to wear her zebra dress, to look however she wanted.
She even felt comfortable enough to go on a walk with him when he didn't tell her where they were going.
"You'll see," he told her. It was the same thing he'd said every time she asked. It was a little annoying, but she was okay with that, because it was Hummer. She trusted him.
They hiked on in companionable silence for a while, before Hummer said, suddenly, "Close your eyes, Ali, okay? We're almost there."
She closed her eyes obligingly, but complained, "How can I get there if I can't see?"
"Hang on," was all he said, and then suddenly she was moving upwards, as easily as if she weighed nothing. Alianna yelped, surprised. So that had been advice, not a request...
She hung on to his shirt, and kept her eyes closed as he walked forward. The swaying motion was kind of soothing, actually. She could fall asleep like this, safe and swaying.
"Here we are!" Hummer announced, his voice rumbling through his chest. "You can open your eyes now."
Alianna did so slowly, not sure what she would see.
It was bright, that was the first thing she knew. Bright, and colorful. There were pinks and blues and oranges and reds, bright against a blanket of green stems. She blinked rapidly, and the colorful smudges resolved themselves into flowers, thousands of flowers, peonies and bluebells and daffodils and roses spread out across the ground for at least half a mile.
It was a perfect day for the flowers, too. The air wasn't too hot or too cold, the bees droned lazily over them but showed no inclination to go after the two people invading their realm.
Alianna thought she could quite happily stay here forever.
Well, as long as she could bring a book.
And Hummer.
"This is... wow," she gasped. "This is beautiful!"
"Oh, good," Hummer said, sounding pleased. "I'm glad you like it."
"Of course I like it!" Alianna inhaled deeply. So many flowers in one place smelled glorious. "How did you ever find this place?"
He shrugged, bouncing her up and down a little-- he hadn't put her down, and she wasn't about to remind him to. "I was walking, and I found it," he said, then grinned rather sheepishly. "Actually I got lost. I was trying to find the house. I'm just glad I remembered where it was."
"I wouldn't mind getting lost if it meant I could find this," she said. "Wow. Thank you for bringing me here!"
"You were the first person I thought of," he told her.
She blinked. "Me? Why?"
He opened his mouth, then hesitated, and blushed. "I. Um. I... I thought it's almost as beautiful as you," he confessed, shyly.
Alianna blushed too. "Thank you," she said, just as shyly, and kissed his cheek.
