“’Ee goin’ to cry, Prowse? Are ‘ee wellin’ up?” Captain Graham clasped his grimy hands together. “Be brave, feller, yer can make it.”

Isaac Prowse was stood on the bridge deck at the very back of the Kraken, gazing down at the main deck beneath them. Pirates were clinging to the riggings like monkeys, chanting their odd rhymes and songs back and forth, occasionally squabbling. A group of them were cleaning out the top-deck cannons, brushing them and rubbing the outside barrels until they gleamed. The sun was weak that day and the sky watery; idly, he predicted rain.

“It must be ‘ard, I know,” Graham continued, continuing to grin manically. “Spill the beans-did ‘ee end it, or did she? I ‘ave a feelin’ it was her. It was, weren’t it?”

“Shut your trap, you damn pig,” Prowse spat.

“Ah, there’s the Prowse I love an’ know!” Graham continued cheerfully. “It’s alright to cry, ‘ee know. Though I’m sure yer’ve already done that a-plenty…”

Although not a short-tempered man by nature, after two hours of the very same treatment, Prowse reached a point where enough was enough. Slowly, he turned to face the rambling sea-captain.

“Did she break it to ‘ee gently? I can’t imagine she did. Poor, poor Mr Prowse, all alone in the world…”

Prowse promptly grabbed him by the collar, jerking him forwards, and in the same movement sank his fist into the captain’s stomach. Hard. Once this was done, he dropped the folded-over captain to the deck with a whump and turned back to oversee the crew on the lower deck.

After a moment of silence, he heard wheezing laughter erupt from near to his ankle.

“Ah! That was a good ‘un!” Graham croaked. “Right in the gut!”

Prowse looked down at him, bemused.

“What is wrong with you?”
