The word, of course, screamed Sethan at me.
At the sharp whistle that sounded from over his shoulder, Kairn jerked his head up. He ventured a quick glance at the doorway, and the newly arrived flock of girls. The blonde at the lead directed a smile and a wave at the boys seated behind him. Kairn’s eyes dove back to his plate and he set his attention, once more, on shoveling food into his mouth.
“You see something you like?” Kairn hunched lower in his seat, head bowed and fork scraping his dish, determined not even to see at what poor fellow Aldo’s accusation was directed.
“Not especially,” came Sethan’s reply, and Kairn nearly choked.
Hand shaking, Kairn laid his fork aside for fear he might drop it and cast his friend as discreet a look as he could manage. Sethan’s hands lay folded on the table before them while he leaned back in his chair to regard the much larger boy with a look of utter boredom.
“Sure looking long enough,” said Aldo with a sneer.
Another hulking form drew near. “Give him a break.” Ril’s voice. “What can he do but look? Not like he’s going to get any for himself.” That brought a chorus of derisive laughter.
Kinu laid a thick hand on the table to the other side of Sethan, bending low to look him in the eye. “Ah, poor Seth,” he said, a broad grin spreading across his face. “Not even the whores would touch him.” Sethan remained unmoved, while more laughter rolled through the group.
“Lay off,” said Kairn, glaring at Kinu.
A hand tugged at his collar and Kairn swallowed hard. “Oh, right,” said Aldo, giving his shirt another yank. “How could we forget? Sethan already has a girlfriend.” Kairn lurched forward under the force of a palm to the back of his head and another round of laughter echoed all around him.
The heels of Kairn’s hands slammed into the table, the chair skidding across the floor beneath him as he came to his feet. “You take that back,” he said, whirling to stare up at the string of faces leering down at him. He shrank back against the table, one hand curling around the back of the chair that was all that stood between him and Aldo’s imposing bulk.
“Right,” said Kinu, straightening himself. Kairn‘s head spun in his direction. “Seems there are whores that will stoop that low after all.”
Kairn let loose of the chair, his hands winding into fists as he turned from one to the next, all now reeling with laughter. Aldo’s hand caught the back of his head again and Kairn glared at Sethan, still seated serenely amidst the commotion. “Aren’t you going to say anything?” he said.
Cold, blue eys caught his own. “Sit down,” he said.
“But-”
“Sit,” Sethan repeated sternly, and the boys laughed again as Kairn dragged the chair back under him.
“I am not,” said Sethan, lifting his chin to fix Aldo with his typical look of boredom, “interested in your girl.” Kairn flinched as Aldo’s hand came at his head again. “Nor in Kairn,” Sethan added with a roll of his eyes. He laid his utensils neatly across his empty plate and pushed it across the table. “Some of us,” he said, rising from his chair to look Aldo in the eye, “have something called restraint.”
Snorts and snickers sounded as Sethan strode calmly away. Aldo gave Kairn’s chair a shove with his knee.
“Hey!” said Kairn, teetering on the seat.
A few paces away, Sethan whipped around. “You know,” he said, voice still flat as he looked from Kairn to Aldo. “I said I wasn’t interested.” The corner of his mouth quirked in the slightest. “Never said I couldn’t have her.” Aldo eyes narrowed, and he folded thick arms across his chest.
“I could,” Sethan continued, with a pronounced glance to the serving table where the girls were gathered, “stroll right on over there and kiss her.” His lips slid into a grin as the color drained from Aldo’s face. “Right now, in front of everyone. I wonder what Master Berwyk would have to say about that.”
“You wouldn’t,” said Aldo, his grip on his own arms tightening.
“No,” said Sethan, with a pointed look at Kairn, and Aldo followed his gaze and edged hastily away from his side. “I suppose I will be leaving her alone.”
