Summary: The morning after the very first time. Miss Merritt is as confounding as ever.

The morning was chilly and diamond-sharp. Isaac Prowse stepped out onto the deck of the Kraken with an unusual nervousness squeezing in his breast, straightening his collar in one swift movement before glancing down the length of the deck. Pale light strained from the scarcely-risen sun and greyish fog clung to the towering masts and sails.

Without hesitation, he walked towards the stern of the vessel where he knew he would find her. Pirates clung to the riggings and dragged themselves groggily across the deck, counting down the final half-hour before they switched with the morning crew and finally got some sleep. Captain Graham, of course, was dozing blithely in his cabin.

Even from behind there was something dangerous about Miss Adele Merritt. It wasn’t just the slash of her skirt, the cut of her jacket, the ridiculous height of her heels-there was an intense rigidity in her posture, a strong-willed lift to her chin.

“Good morning,” he said politely from a few paces behind her. She turned her head slightly so that it was in profile, the sharp angle of her nose dark against the pearl-grey of the sky.

“Morning,” she echoed. The edge of her lip that he could see quirked into a smirk.

The two of them had had sex last night. Isaac wasn’t at all certain that they should have-not that it hadn’t been wonderful at the time. He was sure, however, that women like Adele Merritt were not good for one’s health. He also had absolutely no idea what the commonly accepted etiquette was for such a situation.

He decided to stick to his gut instinct. Closing the distance between them, he aimed a kiss at her cheek, leaning forwards and downwards just enough-

Of course, he was met with an instant rebuff, her hand rising to push him away by the face. Charming.

“Oh dear, Prowse,” she said, her smirk becoming stronger. So he was back to ‘Prowse’, was he? That wasn’t what she had been calling him the previous night…

“You’re impossible,” he sighed; he couldn’t resist.

“I just want to make my standing clear before you rush into anything,” Adele said, batting her eyelashes prettily. “I don’t want any funny business.”

Isaac’s stance instantly changed.

“Well… I… of course not, I wouldn’t…”

“And by ‘funny business’,” Adele said, leaning towards him suddenly, her voice dropping in temperature by several very tangible degrees; “I mean no kissing, no hand-holding, no marriage proposals, no terms of endearment, no doe-eyes… none of that idiocy. Got it?”

Isaac stared at her, speechless.

“Don’t look like that,” she continued airily. “I don’t have time for romance. We can make this work, can’t we?”

“Make what work?” Isaac finally asked.

“Look. You’re a man. Just do what men do best. I know that’s all you want anyway.”

“I beg your pardon? Sorry, could you just be a little more presumptuous for me? I’m sure you could if you tried really hard…”

“I’ll see you tonight,” she said, turning away from him. “I have a lot to be getting on with.”

He could only stand there as she clip-clopped smartly away, wondering what in the world had just happened.
