Notes: Malts 7 & 8 of 10. This took some thinking and then I decided to try some baby Colin and Jez! Sometimes I forget that Colin’s the older one. Also, this is my first ever Fresh Strawberries! Also, there will be a follow-up to this.

Colin bounced on his toes. He had never been so excited in his whole life before, even if that life had only been around for five years. It was the first nice day since his birthday and his older three brothers had promised him that they would take him fishing on the lake. By his parents’ decree, their children were not allowed on the lake, unsupervised by them, until they were five and solid swimmers, which all five kids were from growing up on the shores of a lake.

“It’s gonna be awesome, Colin,” his next older brother, seven-year-old Jon, told him, beaming. “Ken and Jordan are really good fisherman. They catch loads.” He paused. “I catch loads too,” he added firmly.

“Will I?”

“Well, you’re just a baby, so probably not,” Jon said. As Colin’s small face fell, Jon felt guilty. “Probably not this time, but there will be lots of other times if you follow directions.”

“I’m good at followin’ direction,” Colin said, puffing out his chest importantly as Jordan and Kento, ten and twelve respectively, appeared carrying poles and other necessary fishing things.

“Dad says we have to be in by lunch, so we only brought some snacks,” Jordan said. “Ready to go, Colin?”

“Yeah!”

“Good,” Kento said. “Let’s go.” The three older boys headed for the lake and the small rowboat. Colin lingered for a moment, beaming wildly at being included. He jumped up and down in excitement, not wanting to do that in front of his brothers. Colin was about to follow them, when a small voice distracted him.

“What’re we gonna do today, Colin?” the four-year-old Jasmine asked as she bounded to his side, smiling happily, her stuffed bear tucked securely under her arm as usual.

Colin stopped dead, eyes going wide. In his excitement over his inaugural fishing trip, it had never occurred to him that he would be leaving Jasmine behind. Being only about thirteen months apart in age and over two year younger than Jon, the pair were near inseparable. “I, um, we’re not gonna play today, Jasmine.”

She tilted her head, watching their brothers go down to the boat. “Why not? D’you have to do something with Dad?”

“No.” Annoyed at her for taking away from his excitement, he scowled at her. “Maybe I just don’t want to play with you today.”

Her expression completely crumbled, brown eyes getting huge in her face as they filled with tears.

“Why don’t you go play girl things? Or baby things?” he continued, feeling guilty for making her cry and only getting more annoyed. “I’m going to go do big kid boy things.”

Jasmine burst into tears, turning and racing off towards the manor as fast as her small legs would carry her, the sound of her sobs carrying back to him. Squirming guiltily, Colin turned and ran the other way towards his brothers.
