Strawberry #1. Strawberries with Whipped Cream
(now I'm making myself hungry...)
Rating : Big Fat G (for fluffiness)
Timeframe : early 1240's

The small hand, whose fingers had wound themselves firmly between his own, propelled Rune from the kitchen, accompanied by the frequent command that he, “Come see! Come see!” Neither was needed for him to comply, though he was sure Tish would have used just as much force had he told her as much.

The rear door of the inn opened onto a small yard, and the children’s feet left the worn, wooden planks of the inn for the overgrown grass. The two ducked beneath the row of sheets and towels dangling from the line and headed for the stable.

Along the side of the rarely used building, was a rough patch that had, in the last few years, become one of Rune’s favorite places. There was a strip of earth up against the wall, where the grass had been dug away and a home made for a few ragged clumps of daisies on tall, battered stalks. He couldn’t help but smile whenever he saw the garden and he often wondered if Tish had any idea what a compliment he thought it was that she had planted the thing.

She slid her hand from his, falling to her knees at the edge of the flower patch. “Look! Look!” she said, giving the daisies a shove. The overladen stems wobbled and swayed at her touch, parting to reveal a stand of shorter plants among them.

Rune crouched beside her, eyeing the bunches of tiny white blossoms that covered the little plants. Tish’s fingers settled on something in their midst, and Rune only saw what it was as she plucked it and tossed it his way. He scrambled to catch the big red berry as it flew at his hands, and Tish plucked another for herself.

He sat back in the grass and took a bite. However pathetic the daisies might look, the strawberries were just perfect. Tish grinned at him, juice staining her lips as she devoured her own. She tossed the top aside and rooted around in the leaves for a few more.

“These are delicious,” he said. “I didn’t even know you planted them.”

The grin returned. “Wanted to surprise you,” she said, piling a few more between them. “You like them?”

“Very much,” he said, reaching for another. They lingered in the yard until not a single berry remained on any of the plants and both their stomachs were more than a bit queasy, and still they agreed to come back in a few days to check for more. Rune was never sure as to whether he was pleased more by the strawberries or the pride Tish took in growing them, but they were a staple in her garden from then on.
