1sentence. This is
mariagoner's fault.
01 - Air
He looks so mild, so friendly, so harmless, and Hinata is terrified beyond her wits when he turns his smile toward her.
02 - Apples
The juice runs down her chin as she takes that blissful first bite, eyes fluttering closed, and Kabuto muses about the benefits of providing her a steady supply of the fruit she so craves.
03 - Beginning
The boy is panicking next to his coughing friend, and Kabuto feels a spark of part pity for the girl, part annoyance at the medics who patched her up - ah, if Tsunade-sama hadn't left, then maybe this place wouldn't have run to the dogs, if Orochimaru-sama is to be believed - "Allow me."
04 - Bugs
Sometimes she watches the ants running on the wall, and he'd be willing to bet she's thinking about her team, but it doesn't matter, because she's there with him, and she smiles when she shakes her head to dispel the musing, even when she doesn't know he's watching her.
05 - Coffee
Before, she used to drink tea (green tea poured elegantly into traditional cups, simply because it was the available drink) but she finds the caffeine kick helpful when they start working in the labs at dawn.
06 - Dark
Konoha killed Naruto; that's all there's to it.
07 - Despair
She recites her way of the ninja like a mantra, again and again and again under her breath, rocking with her eyes tight shut and her arms wrapped around her, and again and again and again, because somehow this has to end, someday when Kabuto smiles at her and she looks down and there's a scalpel between her ribs, (it has to) and again and again and again and again and again…
08 - Doors
There are two doors she has to choose between, and behind one is a man, and behind the other is a monster, and Hinata takes two steps toward her future, because she knows the man and the monster are one and the same.
09 - Drink
Kabuto has never had much of a taste for liquor, but he's willing to make an exception for the endearing bitterness lingering on Hinata's tongue.
10 - Duty
Next time he sees her, the words falling from her sweet mouth will be spoken with Orochimaru-sama's voice, and Kabuto allows himself a brief pang of regret before shrugging the feeling away.
11 - Earth
Something dark under his nails; under hers it would be dirt.
12 - End
A pair of glasses shatters on the floor; briskly, a girl kneels next to a man's dislocated body, and checks for breath.
13 - Fall
He finds her… comfortable, in a way that only compares to Orochimaru's amused silences.
14 - Fire
Before leaving, she spills all the results of Kabuto's experiments on the laboratories' every surface, and when everything is soaked in viscous liquid, the smell seeping into the air itself, she flicks and throws a match and closes the door firmly shut behind her, and walks away without running.
15 - Flexible
The white arch of Hinata's neck gleams under the lights as she bows, easily bearing his master's watchfulness.
16 - Flying
"Kaiten!"
17 - Food
They don't need her to eat willingly - tucking a transfusion device into her wrist would hardly be a bother, they'd just have to provide the bonds to make sure she doesn't rip it off - but it means less wasted time when she does anyway; the wariness in her eyes entertains Kabuto a great deal.
18 - Foot
One step too far will bring her downfall; Hinata has to tread carefully lest she stumbles and gets caught in the sticky webs she's trying so hard to avoid as she tries to weave her own, a web in the shape of a single gleaming thread she has to walk like a tightrope if she wants to make it alive, and she's been toeing the line for too long and her footwork has always needed more work, but she's shivering with delight every time she feels her feet gliding one inch further up the rope and Kabuto thinks that she's standing still.
19 - Grave
Her name will make it to the cenotaph, but her body will remain here, because Kabuto informed her that he was looking forward studying how the Byakugan looked after its wielder had died.
20 - Green
"It doesn't suit you at all," he muttered when, after raking his eyes up and down her figure - she exuded unease, loss, confusion, body language whispering please take me - his gaze finally locked onto the seal sprawling on her white forehead; she didn't shiver and Kabuto inquired, in a musing murmur, "would you like me to remove it?"
21 - Head
Kabuto groans, one hand in Hinata's hair as she kneels in front of him; yes, please.
22 - Hollow
Hinata's fingertips brush down his neck, pausing for an elusive second in the hollow of his throat before continuing their smooth gesture, and that's enough to remind Kabuto, as prone as he is to forget it when she mewls and sighs, that she is a ninja.
23 - Honor
Her way of the ninja was to never let go; until then, she bid her time and thought no more of it.
24 - Hope
Traitors are made, not born.
25 - Light
When he wakes up, he's blinded by the harsh neon light and it takes him a moment to understand that he's not dead, the way logic dictates he should be, but sitting with his hands bound behind the back of a chair with strong wire and blunt handcuffs; another moment for the sick realisation that he's down in one of the torture chambers of Konohagakure to settle in the pit of his stomach, quickly barrelled by the thought that they cannot break him because they have no idea of the way he's strung; one last to look up into Hinata's face and the dazed smile she's picked up in the months he was the one torturing her, except now, for the first time, it's faintly perverse, and he knows he's doomed.
26 - Lost
Kabuto knows she cannot win, which is why she hasn't lost yet.
27 - Metal
"We shall have one made for you, of course," Kabuto comments when he finds Hinata's eyes are once again fixed on his hitai-ate.
28 - New
He's never had sex with the people he experimented on before, but he supposes even an old dog can learn a new trick when the situation warrants it.
29 - Old
After Hinata had been taken away, mute horror in her eyes, Kabuto allowed himself to sigh; trying to infiltrate the enemy's ranks and seduce him, really, the oldest trick in the book.
30 - Peace
Unexpectedly, the situation between Leaf and Sound never escalates because Uchiha Sasuke is quick to dispose of Orochimaru, which shocks and saddens Kabuto but doesn't keep him from thinking snidely that if the Sannin was blissed-out enough not to realise the young Uchiha had brought a kunai to bed with him, he deserved what he got, but in any case, Kabuto doesn't waste time before running back to the Leaf, pleading that he'd been victim of one of Orochimaru's mind-altering jutsus and arguing that he saved the Hyuuga heir's life as a proof of his sincerity; two months after his trial, a dark-haired, white-eyed girl stops dead in her tracks when she sees him, and blushes desperately when he smiles at her, mouth falling prettily open, her breath visibly catching in her throat and her thick eyelashes framing suspiciously glistening Hyuuga eyes as her tongue unconsciously, nervously peeks out to wet her lips; Kabuto reckons he may have done even better for himself than he previously thought.
31 - Poison
"Tell me how it hurts," Kabuto instructs as he slips the syringe into the crook of Hinata's elbow and she whimpers.
32 - Pretty
Hinata sucks on his finger without taking her eyes away from his and he is obligated to shift slightly to accommodate the strain in his pants.
33 - Rain
She neglects to run around in the rain (it's monsoon in Konoha), though Kabuto has told her, several times, that she was allowed to if she so wished, with a smile that said that even if she fell ill, they would be always able to cure her - not, not though, because.
34 - Regret
Well, he'd have liked being her first.
35 - Roses
He starts bringing roses to their torture and research sessions - the most meaningless flower, a symbol debased and flaunted everywhere, its passion gone like that of a girl selling herself, numb beneath her rouge, thorns like the hauteur she tries to take to defend herself and which only lures her aggressors in, hurting herself more than them - since he discovered that she liked pressing flowers; the first time, he apologised that he hadn't offered the flowers under the form she preferred, claiming that he liked live things best.
36 - Secret
Tonguing the cyanide pill in her mouth, she keeps her smile sweet, naïve, and perfectly earnest as he is smiling kindly at her.
37 - Snakes
Kabuto's breath ghosts against the mark on her neck, and she tilts her head to the side pensively, almost absently, and allows her mind to wander; he will note that she is not all there, but, unlike Neji, he will not think of biting her to recall her attention.
38 - Snow
He's fascinated by her eyes since he discovered the whiteness of the Hyuuga irises seems to change textures and assume different shades, and he wants to know what prompts it; his first experiment is to measure the colour as related to the amount of pain she's in, the scale covering from lavender at a neutral setting, he hypothesizes, to snowy when she passes out.
39 - Solid
She's been broken so many times one more doesn't really change anything to her, but she's careful not to let it show.
40 - Spring
She never stays down; he thinks regretfully that he should have done a better job remembering that when she's sprung on him and jammed one of his own chakra blades between his ribs.
41 - Stable
"This one's stable," Kabuto announces to Hinata, looking up from the body of the latest candidate for suicide; it's a warning that the route to this escape, at least, is barred, she thinks as he spreads her on the bed, across the unconscious test subject.
42 - Strange
Orochimaru frowns when he reads in Kabuto's reports that the Hyuuga will not cry, puzzlement apparent in every word; later, the reports hypothesise that the suppression of tears may result from a previously unknown mutation of the Byakugan, in a measured, barely restrained tone; later still, the reports start alluding to the possibility to kill and dissect the subject so as to have permanent access to her retinal system with near obsessive interest; finally, when Kabuto starts describing the uncontrolled reactions (physical) he's been able to get out of her, Orochimaru orders the girl moved out of the labs and into Kabuto's private rooms.
43 - Summer
"Don't you like the sun, Hinata-kun?" and there's no way to answer that it reminds her of Naruto; Kabuto does his best but he just doesn't make her burn the same way Naruto did, without even being aware of it, without even wanting to, the way the sun scorches her skin in summer, and she only shivers under Kabuto's fingers because of the sunburns already on her skin.
44 - Taboo
The trick is not to mention Uzumaki Naruto.
45 - Ugly
With the tips of her fingers, she follows the scarred furrows where the veins of her Byakugan used to run, and she refuses to think of why Kabuto smiles when he looks at her, as if she is the most perfect thing he has ever seen.
46 - War
A slow, ambiguous smile blooms on Orochimaru-sama's face when she timidly answers his questions, and Kabuto, two steps removed, feels his hands clenching into fists - this smile has always been his alone.
47 - Water
Hinata loves the sensation of water on her skin, loves letting the heat or cold wash the filth away, loves standing under the shower and feel all of her muscles go slack, which is why when Kabuto forces her against the wall of the shower, she docilely goes with it, places her arms on his shoulders and responding in the appropriate way to his touches, moaning and crying out without needing to be prompted; she thinks she likes that, too, and she can't for the life of her understand this fuzzy feeling that it is wrong.
48 - Welcome
The thing is that Orochimaru loathes Konoha; thus, when a white-lipped Hyuuga Hinata stumbles into Hidden Sound with dull eyes and a broken hitai-ate tied tightly around her forehead, he graciously welcomes her and asks Kabuto to run the necessary tests; and Kabuto indulgently shakes his head with a sigh.
49 - Winter
"You shouldn't be unhappy," he says distractedly, his attention riveted on the tube he's holding up so it'll catch the light, "it's winter in Konoha, you're not missing anything; all the leaves have fallen."
50 - Wood
When she's ready to lose hope, she reminds herself that she didn't need him to find the way out in the Forest of Death.
