It's no secret I thought Final Fantasy VI was overrated. I didn't think it was bad, I just never thought it was super-great. Summer makes me bored, so I just played it for an hour or so, and have come up with the following rant about how one of the first key plot points makes very little sense:

But then, we all know that Square has never been -that- keen on integrating gameplay and statistics with cutscene firepower (or inferred firepower as the case of Terra's reputation blowing up a shitload of Mtek soldiers at once may be), as demonstrated on a number of occasions (Beatrix in FF9 or Sephiroth vs. Aeris in FF7 anyone). Both of those examples can be proven hilariously hypocritical on the part of the story, mostly if you just get your group to about 2-3000 HP and have auto-regen you can laugh in Beatrix's face as your health ticks back up after her Bitchslap-Everyone-To-1-HP move, or get Aeris's HP over 3500 or so (7000 if you want to play fair and say that Sephiroth got a Back Attack on her).
Also, I think Edgar saying to himself "C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-CROSSBOW?!" after pulling off his own cheapdick crowd-control move would be far funnier than the aforementioned reaction to Terra's magic.

I still have yet to play anything from 10 on, but 7 has pretty much been my favorite since I first played it (4 was before that and for a brief period after), and I think in playing through it again recently I discovered one of the big reasons why:
It regularly makes me want to use more characters than it will let me.
In the case of the other games that let you choose your party, that was never really the case. With 6, I only really liked one character out of a cast of 14: Setzer. I liked a few of the others enough that I didn't have any problems dragging them around, but I rarely felt like it was hard to decide on a party. 8 was similar; I never felt any compunction about not using Rinoa or Selphie, and I could usually choose between Zell and Quistis based on the mood I was in at the time. In 9, I liked Freya but otherwise picked characters based on what the situation required and never really gave the others much thought.
With 7, I've found that I actually want to use all the ( ... )

In that case, Yuffie's pretty much a necessity.
