I, too, am very much isolated here at Rhodes. I just found out that I really don't like a lot of the people here. Some are okay, and some are actually more than okay, but I just don't connect with them on any level that makes me want to call them up and hang out on the weekends. The fact that I have a single room as well gives me a lot of time to myself, which I thoroughly enjoy (though probably because I have gotten used to it). I have considered going up in the NE or the NW states and going to school in a place completely different from the city I have spent 20 years of my life living in. It may just be fun, if not completely good for me

I saw a documentary on WKNO once, and this ninety year old man says that he's learned that you can count your true friends on one hand and still have fingers left over. Maybe that's why happening upon good friends is so frusterating. We seek meaningful friendships, not 'friendships' based upon the mundane. And you know, I never thought about love that way. Perhaps there is some ideal that I seek to put people into. It's so easy isn't it? This ideal just lingers there in our minds until one day someone comes along that sheds a little light on it, then all of a sudden hearts kick into full gear...Silly hearts. As for going to NE or NW, checking into that definitely seems like time worth spent. Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need. Life is really too short(to be very cliche) to stay in one place just because it seems comfortable. Go for it.
I have a google alert when Lenoir-Rhyne comes up on the net. So I read your post. L-R is a great place. No college is perfect but, here you do feel like family. We have 2 great alumni that I know about that are prominent photojournalists. One has been nominated for a Pulitzer; Jonathan Ernst. He now works for rueters. A contact for you is Dr. Bill Richter, Chair of the Communications Dept. He is a great mentor and a nice guy. Good luck with your search and finding a place where you will feel "at home" and grow both academically, spiritually and personally.
