That is a very very good point, you do have me there. I remember you could sit there with a blue deck and a single island in your hand, and leave 2 islands untapped. When your opponent starts casting a big spell (Using a whole bunch of mana sources), your fingers start edging toward the two islands... and your opponent suddenly decides against casting the big spell because he thinks you will just counter it.

The poker face by itself can be accomplished on a LAN party though, but those little things cannot... however I can't think of any other examples except for the counterspell trick.

Is that little thing worth thousands of dollars in the long run? I don't think so.

I have the feeling that some of us don't want to play online because they don't want to deviate from their current habits, though.

How to play Magic: The Gathering with your friends without succumbing to shameless consumerism. knightofspades October 23 2007, 17:55:54 UTC
Step 1: Buy several decks of playing cards.

Step 2: Buy 1 sharpie marker.

Step 3: Build your deck conceptually using a piece of notebook paper or a word processing program. Your wrist or lover's back/chest works fine too.

Step 4: Card by card, write the name of the card over the playing cards.

Step 5: Keep the description of each card for easy reference. The Gatherer http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/ helps with this but can be done by hand on another sheet of notebook paper/program/wrist/back/chest works too.

Step 6: Play.

Repeat steps 3-6 to build several decks. Repeat steps 1 and 2 if you run out of playing cards, ink, or lose your sharpie.

Cost is generally less than a booster pack depending on playing cards bought. I forgot how much sharpies cost, so cost may be slightly more.
