My mom is so appalled with Shakira! She listens to pretty much everything up until her US/mostly English releases and after seeing her with blonde hair and like 20 lbs. lighter was so disgusted. There is a point at which Shakira, as someone hot who is also marketing a specific culture with her performances, is no different from other women of color and their racist exotification and fetishization. However, I also think there are situations and times in which she just knows she's hot AND Latina and is gonna showcase that shit and play it up. It IS fucked up to sexualize folks based on culture. Shakira sold as an exotic, wild and crazy Latina is fucked up but she also just happens to be a sexy performer who is still finding some way to express and perform cultural identity. And when you're someone within pop culture like that - how much control do you have over those perceptions anyway?
