Today I cried at work. One week at my new workplace just piled in to some heavy emotional shit for me today. Folks come in looking for housing, and most come from living on the streets. I realize you gotta be profesional in all this and not just breakdown in front of clients but I think some emotion is called for.

You're right, these are folks who are hella disempowered and have been living in totally unsafe, shitty situations. I think some visible compassion and empathy would be totally appropriate.

Remember when me and Dan were there last and at some diner we were talkin about how theory and politics don't mean shit when you're hangin out at that midle school workin with kids? To me, being that entrenched in the reality of what we're theorizing about often pushes my politics out the window. My thoughts and analysis on class and race do not mean shit when the homeless 20 year old Latino boy comes into my Starbucks asking for something to eat.

I'd like to hear more about your job when you have the time.

Also, what kind of support is there for the folks working?
