i'm am eldergoth who used to be quite well-known in my local big-city scene along with my ex, but i decided it was time to go. the stagnation and decay were starting to show, and it the odor it produced was impossible to mistake or ignore. so my companion and i bought a house and moved to the mountains, to an old mining town of barely 200 people ( Read more... )

Eldergoth -- love it. First time I've heard that term. Had to look it up on Urban Dictionary to make sure that I wasn't giving it the wrong meaning (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=elder%20goth). I'm in the "goth over 40" category.

I don't *feel* old, but I realize that I would fit more into the urban goth scene if I were younger. I certainly would have been a goth in high school had there *been* goths in high school. I wondered what happened when goths were out of school for a few years. Did they eventually assimilate? Or did they just assimilate on the outside for the day job?

That might seem off-topic since we're discussing rural goths, but, to me anyway, one aspect of being elder is that late, late nights at goth clubs are a little less doable ;-), so even if I lived in a city, I wouldn't be in the scene.

i don't *feel* like an eldergoth, but alas, the calendar tells me so. it seems i've always associated with those younger than i, and most didn't know my age since i don't act/look it. my companion is almost 10 years younger than i am, and my two exes before were between 6-8 years younger. it helps me stay young ( ... )

I wonder the same thing myself! I recently wrote a dissertation on goth culture, and I would have loved to have incorporated how goth ages, but alas, by the time I settled on a definitive subject I didn't have time to conduct the proper field research that the topic requires. Perhaps in the future, though...

Hallo and welcome to you!
I agree that it takes a lot of work to be an active member of any scene, especially one as visual as goth, and sometimes it's just not worth it. I think a lot depends on where you are in life and what you decide is important.
Your home sounds lovely! I've always found mountains to be haunting and beautiful, for who knows all the secret histories that they hold? :)
