Weekly Opinion Poll #2: What do you usually do on Halloween? How many of us over the course of our gothdom have had one or ten "normals" yell out that it's not yet Halloween? (Because that line never gets old, obviously.) However, despite the age-old wisecrack, it's probably a safe assumption that most goths enjoy Halloween. I'd like to think ( Read more... )

typically, I spend months swooning over some insanely ornate idea of a costume, realize slowly that I can't afford to make it or don't have time to sew it (by hand) and end up just making some silly make-up thing. The last time I actually shopped for halloween and dressed up for a party, I was a Klingon-whore-zombie-junky, ala 60's star trek. It was interesting!
This year I am holding a costume party at my house. Up here, the other staff members are crazy for parties and I like to throw them. People here tend to go all out and luckily in Fort Collins there is an awesome and affordable costume shop and good thrift opporunities. So this year I'm going to throw a party dress up like a pretty gothy mermaid and have a great time!

I find myself doing the same thing! I get all these great ideas, then when the time actually comes I find myself doing a cheap version of a handful of them. There should be more "official" holidays to dress up for, besides Halloween and Mardi Gras, I feel. Your costume this year sounds gorgeous, I hope you'll post a picture or two! :)

I like what you said about balancing Halloween's tacky-but-fun side with it's more "spiritual" side, and I agree that it's fun to do some of both. Smaller parties with friends are always good, especially if they're fairly staid friends who are finally allowing themselves a bit of appreciation for the theatrical.

The right friends really can make anything awesome. I remember one Halloween in which some friends and I simply dressed up and went to Olive Garden. Not my wildest night, but certainly a lot of fun! ;)
