Sorry I've been m.i.a. this week, folks. It's been a hectic but very satisfying time. I hope that everyone had a happy Halloween, and I also hope that all the Americans on here got a chance to visit the polls and vote. And so, slightly later than usual, I give you:

oddly enough? that i'm not pigeonholed as a goth, as i was in the big city. that i'm just another resident of my tiny town, an individual who maybe dresses a bit eccentrically or differently (at the very least *darker* than most), but not subject to denigration or ridicule.

i chop firewood, i walk my ferrets on leashes down main street to the post office, i smile and wave at passersby on the road in front of my house, i chat and visit with my neighbors. i don't judge them, nor they, me. life is good here.

would that the rest of the 'civilized' world could get along so well. seems too many try too hard to be different for controversy's sake, and also too many others focus only on those differences.

life's too short and the world's too small for such nonsense.

on this eve of a brave new world, let's all hope for harmony for those who seek it, and understanding and compassion for those who shun or fight it. :)

I agree, and what well-written words! And I am loving the image of walking ferrets down main street. I've often debated buying one of those pet strollers for my cats, so that they can enjoy the outdoors with me. :)

I became rural before I realized that what I am is 'goth'. My (now ex)husband and I moved to rural north Idaho in 1984 because we wanted some land, and couldn't afford it in southern California.

I, too, love the trees. I wish we didn't live in the middle of a hay field but back in the trees, actually. I love seeing the stars at night, and once in a while the northern lights. I love being able to grow my plants- I'm very much a plant person. I love having real seasons- in southern California, I loved changing seasons but they were rather muted. I love that I can leave my doors unlocked.

Wow, the northern lights! :D I once lived in a house that was among trees and on a hill, so it was like a giant tree house. It was pretty amazing, though I also love hay fields. I live in the middle of a hay field, too, and when the hay grows really tall I look out the window and feel like I'm in Signs or something. :o

I love the fall, watching the leaves change, long walks in our quaint little town... tiny little thrift shops... I really like the quiet pace most of the time, it matches up with my need for a little bit of a less hectic life. I like the weird little family cemetery's and abandoned churches, odd little off the beaten path stores... etc.

Oooh, yes to all that you said, especially the weird cemeteries and such. I adore those weed-covered buildings in the middle of nowhere, they always have that mystical serenity and mysterious history about them.

SSSSSHHH

I love the Kudzu. It swallows the old houses and makes them seem all drapey and fantastically haunted.

There's a country road near where I grew up that is lined with trees that are completely covered in overhanging kudzu. And it's near a cemetery. Bonus! ;)

Similar reasons. My 'other' hobby is natural history and althuogh there are foxes in town, being in, or on th edge of the country is very nice.
I am going to be on a campus in the middle of now here next year and I am really looking forward to autumnal walks and winter walks, just seeing the wildlife. I also like the lack of scene 'politics'.

I just find nature invigorating, even in a City, ifi ts a few ferns growing in the guttering or even a park.

I think that campuses are so amazing because they contain so many people, but walk a few feet in another direction and you can find an immense library or deserted woods. I agree about nature, whenever and wherever you can find it, being wonderful. :)

yeah the one at the university i was at last year (Nottingham) had a lake with loads of interesting birds, ponds, bits of woodland. I saw a woodpecker once, and a jay and some kind of newt, a millipede, some bats, as well as the ubiquitous squirrels & magpies. my hall had blackbirds singing outside the window all night and i even saw a wren climbing up the side of the building.

Ooooh, so much wildlife! Blackbirds singing outside the window is very cool. And who doesn't love bats? Unless you're Hunter Thompson on a bad drug trip, that is. ;)

Yay! I just realized that your profile pic is from Pushing Daisies! I love NED. OK, to answer the poll:

I like being out here for some of the same reasons, but also because when I walk home from work in the dark here, I'm not afraid of anything mugging or eating me. I sleep better in the silence of the country and I cna't believe how I ever managed to sleep in such tiny apartments on such busy, noisy streets!
I don't mind the local folks. They've been here since dirt landed! Of course I haven't mustered up the courage to get all dressy in "town" (which is actually one general store, two restaurants and a liquor store), but I thinks that's more street smarts than lack of courage. I don't get harrassed really up here, cos I spend money when I go into town and inthis economy, that speaks volumes more about allegiance than anything.

I guess I like being a country goth because it's simpler, I have more time and space on my hands to actually work on projects that matter to me.

Hooray, another Pushing Daisies fan! I don't know who I love more, Ned or Lee Pace. ;)

I agree about using street smarts. When I was younger I wore what I wanted where I wanted, and I faced a few scary situations. Now I'd just rather choose when and where I dress to the nines as opposed to dealing with crap every time I step outside. And I really don't have the patience to spend 3 hours getting ready like I used to. ;)

Oh yes to working on projects! It's amazing what you can get done when you don't have as many distractions beckoning to you.
