Weekly Opinion Poll #1: What do you think about the current goth club scene? This is a fairly obvious one, but we are only in the beginning, after all. For those who live far away from any goth club, do you miss it, and if so, what do you miss, and if not, why? If you live near goth clubs why do you choose to attend or not to attend? What, if ( Read more... )

My 'local' Goth Club was about an hour's drive away. On the one hand, I loved getting out of town for a little bit, on the other, its a VERY tough time to try to get all prettied up, drive an hour, spend several on your feet, need to eat (having not really had time to do so before clubbing), then do the long ride home (which when had to when we still went clubbing, because we were looking after Granny, and she needed to see us home in the morning.)

Also, the 'scene' in the town that was 'close' is pretty small, so even though I got some nice socializing in, it was often lacking the 'vibe' of a bigger club, with the throbbing music and anonymity of a 'body' of dancers to loose oneself in.

I VERY much don't miss the long drive... Although if magically I had the time,I'd still go every few months to have a really good excuse to get all Gothy-Pretty. ^_^

I'm the same with a small club about an hour away, and most of the time it's just not worth it. It was one thing when I was at uni and had a bunch of mates to keep my spirits up when I felt tired, but now that I'm on my own I just can't be arsed. No offense to the hard-working folks running the club, of course. And how fitting that I now have better clothes and not enough time to go clubbing than when I was at school and going every other week!

Really, I think its a bit harder as you get older to go to clubs alone. I was happy to hold up the corner between dances when I was younger, but frankly without a bunch of really good buddies, its hard to go to the club now.

No offense to my local peoples, but although we are acquaintances, we aren't the best of friends, and conversations feel awkward at best, and the few times I do go 'out' to dance, I'd end up failing out there on my own, with a massive audience of wall-huggers.

So I smoke and hide behind boi while he gets fawned over.

My wardrobe is improving! I tend to loose cloths and club spots when I move, so I've rebuilt the whole thing through the thrift store over the last few years.

I agree completely about it being harder to go to clubs alone as we age. Despite goth's penchant for the strange and unusual, no one wants to be the creepy old person standing alone in the corner. ;)

As for clothes, I think that my wardrobe is far better today than when I was a wee gothling, but I suppose that's to be expected. With a job and grown-up responsibilities comes the pleasure of being able to afford a new corset now and again. :)

I've just been in Nottingham where there is a scene, but I wasn't really in it. I just liked the opportunity to go out dancing and having a shop which sold crazy colours of hair dye. I've not been to Whitby or WGT, but I am itching to, plus I also miss Berlin which has various bars and interesting shops.

I had friends who went to WGT this past year and couldn't stop talking about it, and I was nearly salivating at the thought. Note to self: must save more money, must go soon! I was recently in southwest England and was surprised at how often I was able to go to goth events, as the town I was living in is one of those cathedral towns where everything closes by 4:30 pm. But then having DJ friends with cars certainly helped!

I live in a town that literally only has a post office, deli & pizza joint. I have to drive 45 min. to Philly if I want to go to any goth clubs. The thing that really sucks is that one club's goth night is on Wednesdays which is nearly impossible for me to ever attend when I have to get up for work at 5:30 every morning. Ten years ago it wouldn't have phased me but I'm 35 now & well, I need my sleep! *lol*

I'm the same way! I remember being a freshman in college and staying up all night with no worries, but by the time I was a junior it was more difficult to do so. Now I just happen to keep night hours, but I definitely need my day-sleep or I'm rubbish! As for a club night on Wednesday, it must be nice for those who live in the city to be able to just pop by for a spell, but it's just not easily done for out-of-towners. But then again, several of the weekly goth nights I've been to haven't been as nice as the monthly ones, for some reason or another. Maybe it's the extra planning, or the anticipation involved.

I've recently moved from London into the wilds of North Wales for much the same reason as yourself. I've found I don't miss the clubbing so much but the occasions to dress up which I love.I keep in touch with events and friends on LJ and Facebook and will travel if it looks like a good do.What I did tire of was the pub type gigs, too noisy to talk too small to dance equals boredom for me. I have yet to find a goth community here but I fear it may be of the young EMO variety and not for us "mature" types! In the meantime I dress up daily as much as I can much to the amusement of the village and we have several goth clothes shops in our local towns.

Those pub gigs you described are not high on my list, either. Though once I saw Cruxshadows perform in the tiniest hole-in-the-wall I've ever seen, complete with 4 goths, 6 emos, and about 20 rednecks who just sat at the bar and drank beer, eyeing us all warily. That was one for the scrapbook!
I must say, I was very impressed during my time living in the UK with how nearly every tiny hamlet seemed to have at least one goth shop. Here in the southern US there's one Hot Topic 45 minutes away from me. And while it's nice to stock up on Nightmare stickers and Amy Brown notebooks, I was definitely spoiled by having so many amazing stores nearby in the UK. Thank heavens for the internet!

I visited NYC last December and had a fantastic time at their goth clubs, so I feel your pain! I haven't been to any in DC, though, and I'm surprised to hear that they don't really dress the part. I would think that most of the big cities would do so, especially with (supposedly) more clothing store options.
