When I was younger and in more populated areas, I'd always find a club or a party. Since moving out to the sticks, its more about things like, decorating my house, having a nice dinner, the ritual of making my yearly decorations, baking, taking my Niece trick-o-treating, or even just enjoying the hell out of the turning of the season ( Read more... )

I live in Sweden now (moved here from NC in 1994) so just finding a pumpkin can be an adventure! Some years they are sold at many stores, but not other years and I have no idea why. Because of this, I don't do a jack-o-lantern but just cut-up my pumpkin and eat it, plus freeze some of the mashed pumpkin so I can make pies with it later on at Yule.

Huh. Maybe supply and demand? I understand that truck-farms are more the norm than the corporate farms they have in the US. Mebbe if they have a bad year, it just makes no pumpkins?

I have the struggle between Jack-O-Lantern and pie every year. ^_^

I put up my skull lights on the mirrors, and, years when I can remember where I put the damn thing, I put up the light up spiderweb & spider. (this year is *not* one of the ones where I can remember where I stored it. I'm sure I'll find it sometime next spring) Other than that, it's pretty much life as usual. No trick or treaters come out here in the sticks (not enough population density), no one I know has a party. It always rains like hell and has a lot of wind right at this time of year (and there is snow predicted for tonight), so a lot of outside decor is out- plus, no one but us would see it.

But at least at this time of year people smile at how I'm dressed instead of giving me the eye!

Sounds like it would be a perfect time to have a personal party with candles, horror movies, and a WHOLE pallet of cupcakes.

We don't have much of a Halloween tradition here (the Netherlands), which is sad because I love the spookiness. So, my sister and I will stay in, probably make jack-o-lanterns, cook up something nice, maybe watch a scary film or two. Dress-up...maybe. It's all very low-key, I'm afraid. :B Pumpkins are not very easy to come by, but we grow our own. I think that's one of the best bits of living in the country...your own vegetable patch!
There will be a Halloween party at this pub but I don't think it's for me... There's no 'scene' or 'clubs' near here, but I don't mind. I like the quiet. :)

That sounds perfectly acceptable! Is it too cold for pumpkins in the Netherlands, or is it just something not commonly grown there?

:)
I think it's just not a very common or popular veg. The only type I ever see at markets and grocers is Hokkaido pumpkin, but they're often quite hard. I never succeed at carving them, they just break into pieces. :B

Let's just hope Halloween gets more popular in the Netherlands. :D Although growing pumpkins can be fun. I have a heck of a time getting them to grow tho!
