So I have this new housemate. He's a guy in his late 20s who came over to Aus to travel and work. He has never really achieved anything in life, just kinda worked in all sorts of odd jobs.

It couldddddd maybe also be that he has a form of... disorder, I guess you could say? Like Aspergers or a mild form of Autism. That's just the vibe I'm getting, I could be very wrong. It sounds like he's sort of trying but doesn't really know how. :[
