Mulder realizes he’s never seen the picture the moment he uncovers it in a box at the back of the closet in her home office.
William’s serene blue eyes look back at him, a hint of a smile on his lips. He looks happy, and Mulder’s mind wanders to a six year-old boy who takes after his father. He’s an energetic kid who spends his days practicing his right-hand swing, and his nights surveying the stars, pondering what worlds are out there while lying in his backyard.
Unbidden, a man joins William on the grass, and Mulder remembers that he will never know who his two-day old son became, or who he will be. His fingertips trace the tiny, glossy face.
If only he had never left them.
Later, they prepare for bed. He doesn’t ask Scully why she hid the picture, or tell her that is now occupies space on the wall of his office.
As he holds her in bed, fingertips whispering over an abdomen that will never again be swollen with his child, he wonders if she ever blamed it all on him.
