this plaguey throat

I've had an appalling sore throat for about a week-- living entirely on ice cream, which is not fun despite how it sounds-- and the doctor yesterday diagnosed me with strep ( Read more... )

Anyway, I am feeling terrible. If you've come across anything interesting or funny or cute or at least not related to the flaming political trash-fire lately, now would be a wonderful time for a link.

Rhiannon Giddens did a great cover of Lil Green's "Why Don't You Do Right" with the Carolina Chocolate Drops and also a knockout a cappella "Reynadine." I discovered her through Sxip Shirey's "Woman of Constant Sorrow" and am now in the process of tracking down everything else she ever recorded, including the song my mother heard on the radio and called me to tell me about. I would also like to know much more about Xavier, who does "Cinnamon Stick" (hot and vaguely Jarmanesque!) and two other tracks on the same album. Otherwise I spent literally the entire afternoon at the doctor's (part of which included derspatchel reading me political trash fire updates from his phone) and am in sort of the same boat, except maybe not with strep, fingers crossed.

Love.

I have been snow hiking this week. It has not really resulted in shareable things, just: snow hiking. But it also has completely dodged the trashfire.

I don't recommend it with strep, but I do recommend it otherwise.

I too had ice cream this evening. Mine was with a banana they had sliced in half, sprinkled with a tiny bit of brown sugar, and blow-torched. And also a sprinkling of wee eensy bits of cashew brittle. This combination turns out to hit all the buttons in my head that a banana-Heath bar Blizzard from Dairy Queen hit when I was 7 but would not hit now. I am heartened by this and will continue the search for proxies for my adult taste buds.

(Rad na delight with tofu at my favorite Thai restaurant hits the savory buttons that 79c Swanson frozen pot pies did when I was 7, despite having zero of the same ingredients. So this is a long quest.)

Sebastian will take care of you.

Your copy of More Christmas Crackers has just arrived. If you like, I can bring it over (with new and different ice creams) on Sunday, after the con. If I didn't get that strep on Saturday-and knock wood! it appears that I didn't-I don't think I'll get it now.

Meanwhile, have a couple of productions of Shakespeare.

This, from Still More:

Nor should we forget that inspired verse from 'The Night I appeared as Macbeth', an old music-hall song by W. F. Hargraves:

I acted so tragic, the house rose like magic,
The audience yelled, 'You're sublime!'
They made me a present of Mornington Crescent-
They threw it a brick at a time.

And this from The Big Bang:

Noel Coward's comment on a production of Antony and Cleopatra, starring Dame Edith Evans at an age when she should have known better:

The greatest moment in the entire production was when the Asp advanced downstage and sobbed 'I can't go through with it. . . .'

Much love,

Nine
