When I first came here to live (from the UK) the changes were subtle. Obvious ones were the climate, the accents (and different words and phrases) and the media. I had to learn, though, that my very English sense of humour was too earthy for American ears. I was told several times, "You can't say that." So I learned to be gentler.
If you are with someone who can guide you through it all, you'll be fine. I like living here.
I do too :) Even though it is not easy sometimes. Have you ever felt like a foreigner in the USA? If the answer is yes, have you stopped feeling like that after a while?
Yes, I felt like a foreigner when I first arrived, because I was getting used to the culture. I still feel like it when someone stares at me because of my accent. Usually, I feel foreign in a good way, because Americans love foreign accents and are complimentary when they can tell you are from another country; I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard "Gee, I love your accent." That's always lovely. There;s not much that makes me feel special, as I'm an ordinary sort of chap and content to be so, but hearing a compliment about something I made no effort to attain always helps me to feel special
( ... )
I know how that feels. Sometimes a question like 'what sort of an accent is that?' sounds amusing and is encouraging a small talk, but... sometimes it totally annoys me. At least when I hide behind my letters and talk to people online my accent is not quite as vivid :) I live in New York now, so I consider myself lucky. Truly love this city.
You know, I like that notion you have of taking pride in the 'foreignhood' (Have I just invented a new word? lol). Being different can be very good :)
