A brief history of midnight

Jul 15, 2005 19:50

As a dork, why do I find midnight releases absolutely irresistible? I've probably participated in nearly a dozen in the last few years, as part of the three juggernauts of pop dorkdom: Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. And now, I'm gearing for a midnight trip to the Regulator for the sixth book release. Why can't I stay away ( Read more... )

You really should have been in New York with us! Scholastic turned a whole block of SoHo into Diagon Alley, complete with wand-making, live owls, and a wailing Moaning Myrtle bathroom. We went to the festivities, though we required a bit of a detour in a SoHo bar shortly before midnight. (We had a "you're drunk at Harry Potter!" moment, not our first.)

The sad thing is that I didn't actually get a book--I'm stealing Sara's when she's done--so the materialistic bibliophile in me wants a physical trophy from the night.

(Heh, as I write this, my roommate is perched on the couch on page ten, alternating betweeen "I found the first typo!" and "Awwwww, he really is dead.")

Sounds very cool. Regulator was pretty awesome, too. Still lots of 14-year-olds around, but the type of 14-year-olds who have Weezer patches safety-pinned to their messenger bags. Lots of crazy costumes, including one kid who had a fake Dementor attached to his back, and Sirius who brought a large black dog as his Animagus form. Their Sorting Hat was broken, though. Damn thing put me in Hufflepuff, when I'm so obviously Ravenclaw it's painful.

I also found the first typo.

Yes, he really is dead.

I gave in and slept about three hundred pages in, and finished in the morning. It is quite good, I think, though I'm still digesting. (The internet may possibly melt from the relationship-related information in here, some of which goes against some, shall we say, very popular interpretations of certain subtexts.)

Also, it turns out that I got a massive, massive, massive spoiler from a thread title on a completely unrelated messageboard, about which I am retroactively pretty pissed.

Was the first typo the 'site' vs. 'sight' thing or did I miss the first one?

And where do you guys think Snape falls on the evil scale? Is he still following instructions from Dumbledore or was he rotten to begin with?
