Being a kickass rock/pop star is clearly bad for your health.

there may also be a correlation with more males than females tending to die a rock'n'roll death.

Correlation maybe, but not causation.

I think the lack of women is more about it being more rare to view women as being legendary or classic rock stars in the way men can be. The dying thing often adds to the mythology, but I don't think the lack of women dying rock star deaths is why they didn't make the list.

Look at Michael Jackson vs Madonna (he's considered an innovator in a way Madonna isn't); Nirvana vs the riot grrrl scene just for two examples.
