I FIGURED IT WAS ABOUT TIME FOR ME TO WRITE A REVIEW OF SWEENEY TODD (THE MOVIE)

The bottom line is... it wasn't great. At all. As far as movie-adaptations go, it was pretty good, but in general? Nah. Depp suffered for ONE EXPRESSION-ITUS throughout the entire movie, Toby could sing awesome but COULD NOT ACT

I must say, I definitely prefer the musical-- though I actually like Helena's singing over Angela's because its a lighter note and-- Idk, I just like it more. But Idk whose Mrs. Lovett I prefer.

But yeah-- Johnny could have been a better Sweeney, Anthony was WEIRD, though I don't think the OBC one I saw was that great either-- lollll.

And yeah, I prefer the Johnna of the musical. SHE'S FUCKING INSANE-- LIKE SHE SHOULD BE. I kind of want to sucker punch movie!Johanna. Lollllll.

But yeah. Epiphany was ruined. I was certain they fucked it up from when I first heard the soundtrack compared to the ten-year-revival. Ugh.

I still like the movie in it's own right-- but yeah, I prefer the musical :)

idk for some reason, I still put it up in the list of great movies I've seen this year, probably because... I actually enjoyed it, and I thought the cinematography was beautiful and everything. But I think I enjoyed it just because it WAS Sweeney Todd, as opposed to just enjoying it on its own. I liked a lot of stuff, like By The Sea, but for the most part, I thought JDepp kind of fell flat. His Sweeney did nothing for me. HBC was fierce, especially during By The Sea and I totally believed everything she did during Not While I'm Around and everything, but other than that, a lot of stuff just fell flat for me. I wouldn't say it was bad, I would call it... decent? idk lol i didn't think it was that terrible. But I definitely agree with you on a lot of stuff. For some reason, I'm more forgiving towards the film than I would be for other stuff, and... I'm not really sure why?

I thought it was good. I mean, some of it was- like Grace said flat. Buuuut i haven't seen the Broadway version. Sooo. But i do have the OBC recording. But i do have to say i like HBC's Mrs. Lovett's singing better. It's true.

I'm so glad someone got this. I can't believe it has an 80%+ rating on Rotten Tomatoes! Okay, take out the fact that I'm a huge Sondheim nerd with unrealistic expectations. It was freaking BORING!! God, you'd think that with all the songs they cut, the film might actually MOVE at a pace faster than an arthritic turtle, but NO, we like to linger for an hour every time Johnny ALMOST shows an emotion which never actually materializes.

You know what the worst part is, though? This is the only film version that will ever get made now. This steaming pile of crap has ruined all hopes of ever getting a REAL Sweeney Todd movie because stupid people who don't know what it could have been think it's good enough.

I used to like Tim Burton when he wasn't stomping all over good art and re-releasing it as gutter trash.
