Slayers. Lina Inverse is the heroine we all are in single-player RPGs, doing good but probably causing a lot of bad along the way in our quest for slaying monsters and collecting loot. And saving the world, of course, but first we need to 'liberate' these bandits from their treasure..
Unless you've already seen it all, of course, but it's still one of the best series ever. There are a number of movies and OVAs but they go off a different timeline and direction then the main television show or novels, so I'd stick to the anime (first season on upwards). It's got a mix of comedy and drama, seriousness and absolute wackiness, with extremely likeable characters & compelling villians, even the one-shot ones. And the Japanese voice acting cast is probably the BEST ever assembled for any single show, period. The English dub isn't bad at all, it's just the Japanese voices are SO GOOD they make it seem inferior by comparison. That and the rights have switched studios so I dunno if they re-dubbed it or not.. hmm.. anyways, yeah, watch it
I'll give Slayers a look. There does seem to be a fair amount of episodes but they're broken up well. I can't deal with animes that have hundreds of episodes, especially if they're jammed with filler (I would like to watch One Piece but... yeah).
(some of) these titles may be a bit girly, but they're good, nonetheless:
honey and clover nodame cantabile blood+ kare kano rahxephon air (since you mentioned clannad) paradise kiss nana azumanga daioh toradora itazura na kiss kodocha early ranma 1/2 working
When I watched it and got really into it, the episodes were just flying by. If I recall correctly, there were some filler episodes but they tied in eventually with the main storyline. It's in manga format too if that's easier but I really like the music at the end of each episode - suitably creepy.

Honey and Clover was a recommendation to me from a real life friend so that's on my list to watch. Air is too, as will Kanon be.
I'll have a look at the rest and see if anything tickles my fancy. Thanks for quite a lot of suggestions.
