Character Name: Russell Tringham
Character Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Character Age: 15
Address: 850 Goldberg Street
Family: Yuusei Fudou (father), Fletcher Tringham (brother)

Background: Once, Xenotime was a prosperous farming town, with green no matter where one looked. Then, a man named Mugear moved in, bought all the land, and started digging for gold. The townspeople neglected their farms and gardens, and Xenotime transitioned from a town of green to a town of gold. Eventually, the gold ran out, and the town's economy plummeted.

Meanwhile, an alchemist from Xenotime, one Nash Tringham, was living in the capitol city of Central, working in a secret government laboratory. He never quite explained his reasoning, but one day shortly after his wife took ill and died, he simply left his young sons Russell and Fletcher to fend for themselves.. Nash returned to Xenotime, and seeing the despair of the town, he was easily convinced by Mugear to pick up the research he'd abandoned in Central: Synthesizing an alchemic relic called the Philosopher's Stone. He only ever managed to create a cheap imitation, but the red stone he made boosted his alchemic power and was able to transmute gold from plain rock. Once again, Xenotime prospered. At the same time, though, a mysterious illness swept through the town, killing many children and making many more people sick. It was one of the side-effects of Nash's research, and he couldn't allow it to go on. He confronted Mugear, and when he attempted to quit, he was killed.

Five years later, Russell and Fletcher went to Xenotime in search of Nash. They borrowed the names of the nation's youngest military-certified alchemist, Edward Elric, and his younger brother Alphonse, and were hired by Mugear to continue Nash's research. Even after finding out that their father had died, they continued his work in hopes of bringing happiness to Xenotime. Once again, though, the same mysterious sickness was plaguing the town. Russell and Fletcher both knew the cause, but Russell was too determined to finish Nash's work to stop, and Fletcher was too scared to confront Russell. He figured that if he quit, Russell would be left all alone, with nobody on his side.

Luckily, the real Elric brothers were lured to Xenotime by rumors of alchemists trying to create the Philosopher's Stone. The townspeople quickly denounced the real Ed and Al as impostors, but the real brothers investigated and got to the bottom of things. Al confronted Fletcher and told him that he needed to speak up to Russell and let him know that what he was doing was wrong, because if he didn't, then nobody else would. When Russell and Ed got into it and Russell almost had Ed beat, Fletcher stepped in to protect Edward and was badly injured. It was then that he shouted at Russell, explaining to him why they were wrong and how their father would be ashamed of what they were doing.

Russell used the artificial Philosopher's Stone to heal Fletcher's injuries, and the two of them were then approached by Mugear, who had known their true identities all along. He locked them up with the intention of killing them since they refused to go along with the second phase of his plan -- force-feeding the main ingredient of their fake stones to pregnant women, as a very roundabout way of enhancing the stones' power. The real Ed and Al pretended to agree to work for him, but instead they rescued Russell and Fletcher and proceeded to work together to try to bring Mugear down. However, he wound up doing himself in, making his mansion collapse down on his own head.

From there, the Tringham brothers moved in with Belsio, an old friend of their father's, and set to work trying to bring back the greenery that had died out so long ago.

Personality: There are two sides to Russell's personality. The outer personality is calm, collected, and almost suave, with a tendency to poke fun at the less fortunate -- especially the shorter. This Russell is an accomplished alchemist, a loyal and faithful older brother, someone who teases the people he cares for but deep down is a true-blue friend and ally, someone you would want on your side. If he has a problem, he won't rest until it's solved. If his brother is in danger, or upset, or even if he's just fallen and skinned his knees, Russell will see to it that he takes care of things. He'll protect Fletcher, just like he always has. He always will.

Russell's inner personality, however, is almost the polar opposite. He has a tendency to panic and lose sight of his goals when he's overwhelmed. He's a child riding on his father's coattails, desperate to prove himself. If he has a problem, he won't rest until it's solved -- losing sight of all else, sacrificing sleep and even meals in his narrow-mindedness. And he's terrified that he's not a good enough brother for Fletcher, that he's not providing for him well enough, that Fletcher secretly thinks less of him because of the mistakes he's made.

Lately, Russell has been trying to be a better older brother to Fletcher, following Edward's example, but he's scared he's somehow doing it wrong. However, he hides those feelings and presses onward as though nothing were wrong. He rarely vocalizes his inner turmoil, and he especially doesn't say anything about it to Fletcher. It's Russell's hope that by just continuing to move forward one step at a time, everything will turn out okay on its own.

Russell is also highly intelligent for his age, proof of this being in his alchemic accomplishments. He understands chemistry and mathematics on probably a university student's level and is the sort of scientist who thirsts for knowledge. If he didn't think the phrase "Books are my friends" was such a stupid one, it's one he would apply to himself. Even when he doesn't have a project he's working on, he can often be found burning the midnight oil, reading and deciphering high-level alchemy texts beyond the understanding of even many adults. Naturally, he lords his superior intelligence over the less-abled, as well. And if you're less intelligent than Russel and shorter than him? He'll never, ever leave you alone. So sorry. ♥

Abilities: Russell is an alchemist. He specializes in plant-based transmutations, but he can transmute other materials also. Just not as well. I'll put more details here if it becomes relevant.

He's also a strong physical fighter, even without alchemy to help him.

How's my driving? Please let me know what you think, if there's anything I can improve on, etc. Comments are screened for this post.
