Underneath the Obvious
He will never be a good swordsman; he is stupid and clumsy. Brute strength, the monks say, that is all he has, empty-headed and eyes full of stars, he has no place among them. Their canes break over his back, and arching in pain, he finds what he is truly good at, taking punishment for Kinoc, taking on the guilt and shame without words.
Sweat blooms forth on his brow as he arches and stiffens under the blows, knowing he has found a skill better than killing, better than swinging a sword. He has found the skill to guard.
