Got back late Thursday night, but went straight to my parents' place in Ajax; they sold their house and moved to a basement apartment outside the city a week ago. This is a drag, because there's no way to get into the city from there, meaning I'm doing a lot of crashing with friends for the next week ( Read more... )

Whoa, me too! Have you read it before? If you haven't already (and I'd be a little surprised if you've missed this stuff) it's worthwhile pre-reading the major books he talks about-- at least, all the Sassoon war stuff (the poems, plus Memoirs of an Infantry Officer), all the Owen poems, and Goodbye To All That by Robert Graves. You can try to slog through Undertones of War by Blunden, but it's badly written and goes nowhere in particular (which, I gather, is seen by some as its strength as far as representing the waiting of trench warfare), and my advisor and I totally gave up on it together when I was reading it for school ( ... )

As much as I love Fussell, I just started reading this one a couple of weeks back, and not racing through it like I do far too many books. And yes, I've already added a couple more volumes to my must-read list as a result of it.

Too bad you can't make it out here, but we'll catch up at some point. You guys should just move out there anyways. The east sucks.
