Ugly Pop Records 1998 - 2005 RIP

Jul 19, 2005 10:47

I guess this has been decided for a couple of weeks now, but just to make it official, Ugly Pop is (nearly) over. After 17 releases, nearly 30 000 records sold and more hassle, debt, strained friendships, broken deadlines, messy desktops, computer screen-induced headaches, coloured vinyl mishaps, reversed labels, unsold trade records, missing ( Read more... )

Thanks. I also have a package to mail you, once I manage to get you a Chuck Norris EP. I don't know why it's so hard to get records by local bands in this city.

Dood, ending with the Tranzmitors 45 would be like saying "Yep, powerpop killed hardcore. Deal with it." I don't know. I'd also strongly urge you to fight for the Teenage Rejects LP 'cuz it's essentially the missing link between the current hardcore and garage trends. It's a shame that Ugly Pop is calling it quits right when the upcoming records are some of the best releases you've ever (potentially) done.

These comments aren't meant as criticism or anything. They're just rants because despite all the crap that I know you've had to deal with you've managed to consistently put out quality records and have refused to pander to the trends of the day. Unless of course Ugly Pop is biting it so you can start a finnishdbeat/usposeurpop label in which case I leave you with the best lesson Ugly Pop ever preached...

If it's not punk, it's not hardcore. RIP

I'm really going to try and make sure the Teenage Rejects 12" happens, and it's certainly not impossible, I just don't want to make promises unless I know I can follow through on them.

And yeah, CatCall is basically a non-hardcore (but) punk rock label, and the first two 45s will be a garage/girl band and a power-pop/'77 punk band, but honestly, I see no reason to be running a label dedicated to a style that I do still occasionally enjoy yet mostly get more defensive/nostalgic about than actually listen to.

It seems like just yesterday I was 17 and you'd sent me those first few 7"s for free just to review them.
That Raw Power reissue was a cornerstone of my later teenage years. I just bought that album for my sister the other day too!
It was a fucking awesome run. Kudos to you!

I just noticed this post. Fuck, I didn't know about this. Sorry this had to happen. Hopefully you'll be able to go onto other projects.
