By selecting a woman as his VP pick over another geriatric male, McCain has given himself a real shot at the White House (which I really don't think he had before)... I'm sure those with political aptitude could have predicted this, but I was stunned ( Read more... )

Hmmm...I have been thinking about McCain's move since I heard the news. I keep going back and forth on whether or not it was smart.

YES: He *might* pick up a few Hilliary supporters that were voting Hillary purely on the fact that she was a woman. But, I don't think the majority of Hillary supporters were voting for her JUST because she was a woman. I democrat AND a woman AND a senator AND the wife of a much admired former President AND her experience...that was what most of Hillary backers were basing their vote on.

NO: I'm thinking he might lose some of the "old boy" Republicans because of his choice. Like my dad...who is a Republican...is going to have a very difficult time voting for McCain now that he's picked a woman. He probably will not vote at all now.

Who knows how this will turn out for him.

On one hand, yes, it would be awesome to get a woman in the white house, but not at the expense of not having a Democrat there.

Yes - but he picked a Pro-Life woman with a lifetime membership in the NRA (who was also a beauty queen). He might not lose as many old boys as you think, they might even be a bit jealous?

Jim automatically assumed I'd be voting republican after hearing this bit of news today. ha. I'm thrilled he chose a woman but I don't trust McCain anymore than I did yesterday before I heard this news. I'm happy that, as you said it, either way, it's going to break that cycle of discrimination. Just gives me hope for the world.
