Guess I always felt sorry for him! It's some good writing to have a character you alternately want to hug and punch in the face several times in the span of the same scene, but that's him.
I think most people feel that way about Rimmer - the writing and the performance was always pitched perfectly somewhere on that knife-edge between a character you feel sorry for and the awfulness of him. And, as you say, it's very human, even if - thankfully! - most of us aren't at Rimmer's level.

Oh yes. It's a wonderful balancing act, and I can really appreciate the writing effort that went into getting him just on that spot. I'd have tipped too far one way or the other.
I may also have emphasized with him as a teen, embarrassing as it is to admit. Hey, I was the weird kid with the perfectionist dad...

Aww, I think empathising with Rimmer is perfectly natural. He's just... Rimmer. you do. And then he's awful and you sort of don't but you still do. ;-)
