Other person, on seeing I'm wearing shorts: "You're so brave! It's freezing!"

*walks outside into blazing hot sunshine*

Maaaan. Southerners, huh?

Do Californians count as Southerners?

We moved to Santa Barbara four years ago... most beautiful weather in the world, almost always clear, sunny, with a light breeze, roughly between 70-80 F. Year-round. (There's a bit more rain in the winter. Upper 80s in August.) Gorgeous. Like a dream.

But boy oh BOY, people here can discuss (and complain) about weather. They are EXTREMELY aware of the difference between that high of 80 ("oh my God, it's soooooo hottttttt!") and that low of 70 ("it's SO COLD, isn't it? are you cold? I'm cold. God, it's cold.")

Good question. You guys have a whole different set of temperature gradients to work with. I wasn't expecting a dramatic difference with only a few hour's drive south, but it feels a lot warmer here than back home.

I thought the joke that t-shirt weather in the north starts at 5 degrees was a joke, but you know, I think it's true. Early on in the year I was walking around in t-shirts while all the locals had coats on. (We had a very mild winter this time around) I must have horrified quite a few!

Heh I always find it strange with tv shows set in California, like Buffy or Veronica Mars, where the characters are frequently shown wearing coats or sweaters. Coming from a country that rains constantly, I just can't fathom wearing a coat or something knitted on the days when it gets really warm and the sun is beating down on you

That's like me - I'm always wondering how people around me can need so much heating!
