Summary: Who knew staring at someone would get you so far?
Brendon Urie stuck his black earphone into his ear as the A train pulled up onto the 42nd street subway station. Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” sounded from the headphones, his fingers moving subconsciously with the back beat of the song.
He entered the air conditioned car and found a seat before the subway cars closed. It was 10 at night and the car was somewhat deserted, give or take a few either end of the car. Brendon rested his feet on the seat next to him, his eyelids slowly drooping from his exhausting day at work. Remind him never to take another case with Frank Iero ever again. That man was way too hyper for his own good. He felt the train jolt to a stop and he heard the doors open. He opened one of his eyes and scanned the train car. He was alone, which was surprising since it was only 10 at night, but there he was by himself. He could actually get some kind of sleep before he gets home.
The music from his headphones had lowered in volume as it was ending and Brendon’s ear caught music coming from a different pair of headphones. He looked up to see a blonde man sitting down on the seat across from him. The man’s shaggy dark blonde hair rested against his forehead and his sideburns seem to lead the way to the beard covering his chin. Brendon also noticed that the man’s eyes were a rich blue, something he really only seen when he went to the beach in perfect weather. He also noticed that the man was staring at him. He quickly looked away, a blush rising to his cheeks. Brendon could feel the man’s eyes still on him and he started to squirm under his stare,
“Hey.”
The man called out to Brendon as Brendon scratched his head. Brendon pointed to himself in disbelief even though he knew the guy was talking to him. No one else was in the train car with them. The guy smiled and Brendon almost swooned.
“Yeah, you.”
Brendon sat up right in his seat, trying hard not to smile to himself, and took his right earphone out of his ear. “Yeah?” he asked cautiously, eyeing the man who was eyeing him.
“I just wanted to ask you why you were staring at me?”
“Oh,” Brendon started, stuttering as he tried to form a sentence. “Um, well, I-I was just, you know.”
The guy smiled again and Brendon shut his mouth to avoid further embarrassment. He took another chance and opened his mouth to speak. “I heard that you were hearing The Smiths. That’s just amazing in my book.” Brendon smiled at the guy and was about to dig his earphone back in his ear when the guy started chuckling.
“True. I’m Spencer.” He held out his hand and Brendon took it.
“Brendon.”
Brendon smiled slightly reminding himself that the gorgeous man in front of him was probably straight. Lucky bitches. “Sorry for the staring. I didn’t notice I was doing it.” Brendon told Spencer as he laid back into his seat. Brendon realized what he said and noticed that it might have sounded creepy. “Uh, that sounded creepy. Sorry.”
Spencer laughed again, enjoying Brendon’s nervousness. “It’s okay. I usually don’t ask random people why they stare at me. Especially on the subway.”
“At least it got you a new friend.” Brendon smiled at him again before he inserted his earbud back into his ear. To be safe, Brendon focused on his sneakers but he couldn’t shake that feeling that someone was watching him. A faint call of his name against his music made Brendon look up at Spencer. He was waving his hands around to catch Brendon’s attention.
“Sorry. Yes?” Brendon plucked his earphone out of its place.
“What stop do get off on?”
Brendon looked at Spencer quizzically as he answered his question. “Canal Street.” Spencer nodded for a while before he addressed Brendon again. “I stop on Chambers which is the stop after Canal.” Brendon nodded at the obvious fact Spencer had just told him, not sure what Spencer was trying to tell him.
“I was wondering if you wanted to grab a bite now, I mean I made a friend today for listening to The Smiths. I can’t let a cool person like that get away.”
To Brendon, it seemed like Spencer was flirting and blushing. Spencer was actually blushing. “Well,” Brendon glanced down at his sneakers and on his way to meet Spencer’s eyes, he caught a glimpse of Spencer’s rainbow bracelet. On the inside, Brendon did a somersault but on the outside, he smiled. “I don’t have anything to do at home so yeah, we could grab a bite.”
Spencer smiled and Brendon’s inside did another flip. The train came to another stop and Spencer got up, walking towards the exit. “Come on, I don’t want your chance to stare at me in a pizza shop ride away with this train.” Brendon gladly followed.
