“What the hell is this?!” Andy exclaimed as he lifted his fork with a reddish substance from his lunch tray. Joe leaned in over his tray, sniffing at Andy’s fork. “I think,” he took another sniff before finishing his sentence. “I think that’s meat.” “Ugh.” Andy’s fork had dropped from his hand and he pushed his tray away. “I’m not eating today.” Andy noted as he drank from his water bottle. Patrick shook his silently, laughing under his breath at his friends. His fork played with the brownish reddish goop Joe pegged as meat before scooping some and placing it into his mouth. “It’s not that bad.” He told Andy who rolled his eyes.

“Those poor animals died to be your lunch room meat.” Andy said watching Patrick play with his mystery meat. “So they had a purpose.” Joe smiled as Andy gave him a dirty look for his smart remark. Patrick laughed at how Joe was always trying to start an argument with his boyfriend. His blue eyes wondered away from the bickering couple. Patrick took in the crowded lunchroom and just the familiar students interact with each other until he caught a glimpse of a gray and black sweater. The boy wearing it was standing near the wall, scanning the room for someone or something. His black bangs reached his left eye, the left eye lined with black eyeliner. His skin was tan and smooth from what Patrick can see. The boy met his gaze and Patrick saw his thin lips turn into a smile. Patrick felt heat rise to his cheeks and quickly turned back to his table. Andy and Joe were still bickering but when Andy rolled his eyes, he saw how red Patrick’s cheeks had gotten.

“What’s with you?” He asked Patrick. “The guy in the striped sweater. He just smiled at me.” He blushed harder when he noticed he just turned around like an idiot after what happened. He looked over his shoulder and saw the black and gray striped kid walking towards them. “Oh Crap!” Patrick panicked as his milk spilled on the table because of his sudden jump. He grabbed napkins as Joe’s laughter filled his ears and Andy looked behind him. He started laughing. “That’s Pete. He’s new. He’s in my music and math class.” Andy waved his hand toward the table, signaling Pete to come over. “Hey.” A handsome voice reached their table and Patrick stiffened. “Hey Pete.” Andy welcomed as Pete sat down. Pete’s brown eyes Patrick’s hand as he mopped up the milk. “Accident.” Pete asked with a wider grin on his face, handing Patrick some napkins. He took it and blushed harder when his fingers brushed Pete’s. He cleared his throat and replied “Um, yeah. Thanks.” “No problem.”

Patrick’s arm was visibly quivering and they stared at him questionably. “You okay?” Joe asked, a smirk on his face. “Yeah, Yeah.” His voice cracked. Joe shook his head laughing as he turned to Pete. “I’m Joe and that’s Patrick.” “Pete.” Patrick finished mopping up the milk, threw away the mess of napkins, and sat down at the table far away from Pete. Pete’s wide grin had appeared on his face. Patrick was staring to think it was obnoxious but found himself loving it more.

By the end of lunch, Patrick has found out where Pete lives, what high school he transferred from, what type of music he was into (they were musical soul mates, Patrick’s sure of it.) and that he plays bass. “Really?” Andy asked as the lunch bell rang. “I play drums and Joe plays guitar” “Awesome. I always wanted to start a band. You think you guys would join?” Pete asked, adjusting his book bag strap over his shoulder. “Oh yean.” Joe exclaimed as he got up. “Cool. You should come over to my house tomorrow or something, you know, to practice.” Pete arranged as both Andy and Joe stood up. “See you tomorrow then.”

Patrick packed his stuff into his book bag as Andy and Joe walked to class. Standing up, he saw Pete staring at him. “What about you?” Pete asked, his brown eyes striking against the black eyeliner. “What about me?” Patrick asked, his heart pounding in his chest again. “You don’t play an instrument?” Pete’s eyebrows were raised as if he knew Patrick was hiding something. “Umm… I play drums but you don’t need two drummers.” Patrick started to walk to class but Pete called out to him. “Wait!” The late bell rang above Patrick as he watched Pete run to him. “Can you sing?” Patrick had to bite his tongue so the urge of laughing in his face wouldn’t happen. He settled for chuckling instead. “No.” Pete thought for a while. “Sing Basket Case.” “Excuse me?” He was surprised that Pete was so abrupt with getting him to sing. “I told you I can’t sing.” “Everyone sings. If you don’t think you’re good, sing it for fun. Come on.” Pete badgered. Patrick sighed as he looked around the empty lunch room. “Fine.” He gripped his book bag strap and opened his mouth to sing.

When he finished, Pete’s mouth was slightly open and his eyes were wide. “You see, I told you. I can’t sing.” Patrick said as he started to turn his heels. “You think you could come over today?” Pete asked, his eyes filled with hope. Patrick looked around the room even though there was nothing to look at. “I guess so, why?” Pete shrugged, his black and gray sweater raising enough to show a patch of Pete’s stomach. “To show you something.”  Patrick nodded as Pete smiled again.

After school, Patrick and Pete walked to Pete’s house. “What are you going to show me?” Patrick asked, growing nervous with every step he took. “We’re here.” Pete ignored his question as he walked up the side of his driveway. Patrick followed, fast walking to keep up with Pete’s pace. He was led into the back yard and then into a basement equipped with 3 guitars, amps, microphones with stands and a full drum set. Patrick stood in awe at the set while Pete dropped his book bag on the floor. “Patrick.” Pete called him over to where he was picking up his bass.

“Sing into this.” Pete plugged in his and Patrick’s cords into an amp and turned it on. Notes started flowing from the amp as he played in the bass. Patrick sang again, hearing his voice echo back to him. In the 3 minutes they had finished, Pete had another one of his patented smiles was on his face. “I think I found my new singer!” Pete ran over to him, hugging him, the bass their only barrier. Patrick blushed deeply and cautiously wrapped his arms around Pete. The grin was still there when Pete pulled back and Patrick personally felt them when Pete pressed his lips to his. Pete was surprised that Patrick placed his hand on the back of his head, keeping Pete’s head steady as he kissed him back. The two boys pulled away for air. They both licked her lips and Patrick smiled shyly. “You’re a great singer.” Pete complimented. “Thanks,” Patrick blushed for the thousandth time that day. “Umm. I like your sweater.”
