Home again, home again

Roy Mustang, former Flame Alchemist, former soldier, and current one-eyed wonder bartender, has had a long day at work. He's looking forward to coming home, sitting down with the Riza Hawkeye that he's taken in, and eating the free food from the Best Deadly Sin ( Read more... )

Just in time. Riza tossed the laundry basket back in the corner quickly, and shut the dresser drawers before grabbing the small stack of freshly-laundered and folded kitchen towels before stepping out to greet him.

"Welcome home, sir," she said, keeping the towels behind her back out of view. She was proud of herself; the apartment was clean and tidy, and she'd managed to distract herself from the last drink he'd prepared for her before leaving for work. It was still on the counter, untouched, and the other glasses were washed and put away. "Did you have a good day at work?"

"I had a day at work, anyway," Roy says, that smile of his plastered on his face. "The food, on the other hand, smells very good and had several praises today, so it should serve us well."

He takes the bag on his arm over to the kitchen table and smiles a little wider. "I see you haven't had the last drink yet. Is it getting easier for you?" he asks curiously.

That comment with that smile was more than enough praise in her book to make it difficult to keep a calm demeanor. But the question made her hesitate, gave her pause.

"I..." There were towels to put away, and she turned to do that. "Of course. Yes, it is," she lied. He didn't need to know how many times she almost caved in and downed it, wanting the shakiness to stop, the headache to go away. He didn't need to know. The fact he was happy to see one still there was proof enough of that. It made him happy. She'd figure out a way to keep that one glass out, even if he gave her fewer the next day and the day after that.

She could be as good as any of the alternates. She could. She would prove it too, that he didn't need his other one. She could be good enough for him. She just needed time, a chance to prove it.

Roy watches her as she put away the towels, and he frowns slightly. She probably didn't realize it, but her body language wasan open book to him. She wasn't having an easy time of things. He also was getting a sneaking suspicion that she was planning to always keep one glass out now that he's indicated his pleasure with that...

Sigh.

"Are you hungry?" he asks her. "If you grab some silverware while I grab the plates, we can eat."

Roy follows the both of them into the living room, pausing as he walks to give the top of Al's head a light bop with his open palm before he joins Riza on the sofa. "No, Al, I would like you to stay for a couple of minutes," he explains.

He puts his hand on Riza's shoulder and squeezes it gently. "Riza here has not had a very easy time of things in her world, and she needs to see that not EVERY Alphonse and Edward Elric need to have their teeth kicked in."

He looks at Al and smiles then, some sincerity in the gesture. "I didn't go to rescue you just to be ashamed of our friendship, and Riza definitely needs some exposure to a kitten-magnet."

Cue nervous chuckling. "Brother did say they're kind of jerks. I haven't met them, but he said my other alternate who's his brother now too doesn't get along with them at all, or at least not my alternate from her world." Al hesitated, wanting to say more but unsure of what.

"As it stands, I'm rather unimpressed with the world that she's from," Roy says. "I just want to ensure that this Riza has a chance to see that not everything is that bad."

He smiles faintly at Riza and nods to her. "Alphonse is a very trusted friend, as is Edward," he says. "More importantly, neither of them are homunculus."

There was something disturbingly familiar to how everything felt, a feeling that left Riza scrambling backward on a mental level, recoiling and retreating. The casual dismissal of her world stung, and she couldn't quite figure out why. She wasn't particularly fond of it herself, and had walked away from it. Yet... it was still her home, and on some level, always would be ( ... )
