Marshal Forbes/the Council
We met with the Anluc and were advised our task was the deal with "things where they were not supposed to be" and, with some questioning, "fire things in water places" and "portals." These turned out to be literal portals to the Plane of Fire, complete with fire elementals, in various locations. It appeared the fix was dependent on the original nature of the area, with some allowance for substitions.
The first (small) portal was closed with mend castings; the second (large) we assisted the Anluc in performing a magical (presumably water-based) ritual where the large magical lake/pond had once been; the third (small) was in the nature speetles domain and Francis successfully cast something druidic on it while the rest of us distracted shambling mounds. The fourth (large) was a little way up into the air speetles territory and we found a half-elf (not recognised by the patrol, so suspected to be one of Duke Calchas' people) literally nailed to the ground in front of it. He appeared to be possessed by an avatar of the Plane of Fire and Alberich could see a magical connection between him and the portal. He was taken away from it and I stayed with the portal so am not entirely certain what was done to break the link and allow the portal to close. Isambard took the (relatively saner) half-elf prisoner and, at Eorith's command, I weakened him for some time.
The fifth (large) portal was in the earth area accompanied by four smaller portals. By this stage we had acquired a rock goblin by the name of Gik (we rescued them from enslavement by fire goblins) who was very helpful. Myself, she and Alberich raced to get the smaller portal shut down whilst other fought off the elementals, sprites and fire goblins. In the confusion, our prisoner escaped. Gik cast what earth magic she could into the final portal, weakening it, and we finished it off with pretty much everything we had (casting from all four paths as well as nature).
Our Anluc guide appeared satisfied with our success, albeit --, in the tasks set and was returning to the Great Shaman to report.
