Yeah, it's sad that the innocent suffer and perish, but there are so many that we don't even know 99.9% of the victims. We cannot weep for all of them, nor can anyone else. As cold as it sounds, if someone in your family died, you'd care a LOT more than one of your friends. It's just human nature.

Maybe it'd be easier to understand if what you said was in more context.
