So I'm just watching yesterday's Pointless1, and the question is "Football teams who have played in the Scottish Premier League". Someone has just said "Glasgow". Now, I follow football so it's obvious to me that this is wrong, but am I being harsh in expecting that just existing and vaguely paying attention to what's going on around you should ( Read more... )

I can see how this is something someone might not know; some people do genuinely not give a toss about football and would never be watching anything where it would come up in passing. I wouldn't be surprised to meet someone who couldn't name a single rugby league team, for example.

Not even the news? Not even just looking at a newspaper's website and noticing the big picture of some footballers on the front page?

Me neither, but rugby league isn't anywhere near so overwhelmingly ubiquitous as football.

If you don't give a toss about sport, you don't watch all the way to the end of the news. Even if you merely stop paying attention at the start of the sport as opposed to changing channel, then as long as you're not in Scotland, you're always going to have tuned out by the time they get to any Scottish football. Also a big picture of footballers means, to me, 'no point even looking at that headline then', and how often is the big headline going to be about a Scottish team, not an English one, anyway? Football is much more ubiquitous than rugby league, yes, but if you're in England, I'm not sure Scottish football is.

Hmm, I'm unconvinced. I feel about ballet the same way you feel about football, yet I can still say Darcey Bussell.

Further to poll answer: I mean, I can name English football teams, there's Millwall and Crystal Palace, and West Ham, and I expect there are some that aren't named after places in London too. But I don't know what leagues they're in.

I *love* it when it's anything about Scotland, because the 100 people know fuck all, and I seem a genius.

Berwick Rangers probably (if not now), Queen of the South, Caley Thistle, I imagine... It's kind of a 4 horse race, though.

Ha, yes! I don't know MUCH about Scotland, but moving there made it clear quite how little I had known before, and how little most Englishers know about the place.
