I can't answer all your questions, but it seems to me that because you're not having a legal ceremony (which, btw, I think is totally bogus), you probably don't need a permit. I've seen weddings taking place in front of the Carrillon, with the guests standing in a circle around the couple, which I'm pretty confident they did not obtain a permit for ( ... )

Yeah, we planned to use our reception site as a backup in case it rains, but if the weather is nice we'd really love to have an outdoor ceremony. we're going to have to play it by ear leading up to the day of and if the forecast that morning is bad we'll put the word out about the change. as far as seats go, that's why we loved this location so much- the fountain is surrounded by a low stone wall/bench which, as long as our wedding doesn't get crashed by tons of unexpected guests, would be enough seating for everyone.

thanks for your input, i might try calling the city again to see if i can talk to someone else about the permit issue.

Good luck! Sometimes you just have to keep calling until you get the RIGHT person, you know?

And actually, that's another thing about the Carrillon that might be handy - the actual patio around it has a low wall. I can't recall if it's low enough to sit on, but it couldn't hurt to wander over and check it out. : )

Oh, and I just had a brainstorm - have you ever been to theknot.com? Try putting a feeler out on the local community board regarding the wedding that's being held there the same day. Someone might be able to put you in touch with the person, or they themselves might be on there, and you could coordinate from there. Good luck!
