I would say that the problem of highly educated, underemployed young people exists here in the U.S. as well. And unpaid internships seem to be the primary way of breaking into professional, "middle-class" jobs. Not so terrible for those who don't have any student loans and whose parents can afford to pay their rent while they work on getting an "in", pretty crappy for those of us who end up as secretaries and baristas because we can't afford to work for free.

I've been sensing an increasingly apocalyptic vibe about my culture for the past couple of years. I'm scared, but excited as well...

I'm quite enjoying shoplifting at the moment - after reading an (often bourgeois, anti-trade-union) Situationist tract "on the Poverty of Student Life", which said that "anyone with any self-respect" would steal books, I decided to boost my own self-respect a bit.

I enjoy not only the ability to get books while not spending money (particularly as my sole income atm is £4.09 an hour working in Iceland supermarket, as I'm not entitled to minimum wage), but also the radical attack on private property that I imagine is already terrifying Waterstone's shareholders.

Sadly, my methods of stealing are crude - current 'favourites' include dropping the book out of a window (rarely subtle) then going to get it, or, better, tearing off the barcode and shoving the bit of paper behind a bookcase inside the shop...

My "career" still appears promising....

I nicked two lightbulbs from Sainsbury's yesterday, or at least I totally forgot to pay for them. I only realised when I was in Blockbastard picking up some toffee popcorn. I feel so proud of myself!
