I should point out as the author of the first letter in this post that Mr. Willmsen has lived in several foreign (to the UK) countries, but has never learned to drive, so he has never held a gearstick in his right hand.

He is, however, surprisingly skilled with that hand.

In a number of foreign (to the UK) countries in which I have lived, they place their left hand on the gearstick in order to make the car 'go', I believe. Is that what you meant?

What, they drive with their arms crossed!? I tried that once, failed my driving test immediately.

If Portuguese people drove with their arms folded there would be a lot less accidents.
